it's what my niece wants for Christmas - any suggestions? She's 12.

The 'Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty' book perhaps? It's quite expensive though - £15.99

More info on the Bobbi Brown website

tatt · 30/11/2008 11:48

Thanks - it's only 10.39 at Amazon so may get that, although the user reviews say it uses American slang?

I've not read it so I can't judge the suitability for a UK reader. I like Bobbi Brown makeup though and I remembered seeing the book on the counter, your post reminded me. I suspect most teens will be familiar with american slang from all the telly programmes and teen books. Do you have a department store near you that stock Bobbi Brown - they might have a copy you could glance through. (then order off Amazon for best price)

We're all 'au fait' with Americanisms.

Bangs = fringe etc. They might struggle with a book written by Jemma Kidd though. But we know their lingo

anyone remember what website allows you to previe books? I've used it before but can't seem to find it now.

Eh? She's 12...

tatt · 01/12/2008 10:40

she's 12 - what's the problem? Her friends have been experimenting for some time and her mother has agreed she can have some make up for Christmas. So she may as well learn to put it on properly.

Why don't you pay for her to have a makeover done at some posh counter...? Dior or chanel etc. My local chanel counter last week were offering a full make over by some big named make up artist for £20 and this price was taken off any purchase.Ideal if I need advice on certain areas iykiwm.
ds ended up in hospital otherwise I would have booked one.

As a teenager I was never shown what to do and tbh wouldn't have wanted to read what to do (styles etc change) but would have loved a demo. They can explain to her what they are doing, allow her to watch and give her an idea of "basic" make up bag items iykwim.
My mum never wore make up and my big sister wore very very little and tbh I taught myself. Im the exact oposite to them. I wear it every day and I wear the lot .

never seen a make up counter where they live that didn't make people look like clowns. Also her mother wouldn't ppreciate me suggesting dior make up

Stila or Benefit are good for teens. Why don't you take her to a counter for a makeover (which will be free) and then buy her some of the products?

shhhh · 02/12/2008 10:52

dior was only an example btw and not all counters make you look like clowns..depends on the make up imo.

Like anna said, try a more relevant one even boots or debenhams for clinique.

You asked for advice/suggestion !

shhhh · 02/12/2008 10:54

Just to add...bb aren't that much different in price to dior (in fact none iir). Sure her mother would approve of bb.?

southeastastra · 02/12/2008 10:56

we used to have a great mary quant book

tatt · 02/12/2008 19:03

well I did ask about books not make up counters. I'm afraid you have to expect that people will not always follow your advice. I am not going to be there long enough to take her off to a make-up counter, even if I wanted to.

OP posts:
shhhh · 02/12/2008 20:10

tatt,it was just another suggestion that was all.
I don't expect people to follow my advice BUT its just nice now and then to know that your suggestion has been taken on board even it its not needed. Just a negative reply was given.

You don't have to wait around for the makeover, I never suggested that but thought you could give her a "make over voucher" in fact im sure clinique don't charge so you could give her vouchers towards it.

BUT don't listen to advice and do what you want.

Must be a full moon tonight
