Talk to me about hair straighteners please!

Ok I have a dilemma, I need a new set of straighteners as my last pair has had it (after 5 years!).

The ones I had before were Remington wet to straight I think, with the heat setting on the top of them which meant I often accidentally turned it down/off.

Now I don't know which new ones to buy, I have used GHD's before and know they are good but now there are so many other ceramics out there are they still the best?

My hair is quite fine but there is a lot of it if that makes sense? It's not thick there are just lots of strands and it's quite long about 2" from my elbow. If I leave it to dry naturally it has a slight wave to it, a bit like rats tails, but not full on curls. I can easily blow dry it dead straight with a bit of time and effort but after a day of 2 it goes to rats tails so I use the straighteners to keep it looking neat 1/2 times a week.

When I go out I normally use the straighteners to curl my hair which I have been able to do using standard squarish plates so the design of the mk4 GHDs in neither here nor there for me as I can curl hair with any design IYSWIM.

I am umming and ahhing over GHDs MK4 RRP £119ish or BaByliss 2085U Pro 230°C Straighteners which are in John Lewis for £23.50 so a very big difference here!

Anyone have any experience of either of these brands or any other recommendations?

Thanks!

I love GHDs - would highly recommend. Worth the money imo...

My hair is fine but I have a lot of it and it is slightly wavy.

giraffescantdancethetango · 30/11/2008 23:45

GHDs all the way.

Very topical subject for me as my GHDs died a while back and seeking a new set of straighteners for Crimbo. If I get a cheapy type then that'll leave more dosh for other goodies!!
Have been doing a bit of research online for cheap alternatives to GHD. Anyone got any experience of Hairtools Thermo Ceramic ones??

I have a babyliss pair I bought about 3 months ago and they are wrecking my hair. My hair is drying and splitting really badly at the ends between cuts. I can't remember what make the pair before that were but they were much better. The previous ones cost about £50 4 years ago though so I decided just to spend that bit extra and give GHD's a go.

I have incredibly thick, incredibly wild Irish hair with a natural wave. It's also very grey, so has lots of dye on it..

SilverSparkle · 01/12/2008 15:01

GHD's all the way here too.
I have used them for years and to be honest i don't get that many split ends. Try using a serum which you apply to wet hair, its called Redken heat glide. It protests your hair and your hair will straighten so easily and it'll remain straight and frizz free for days!

I don't use any product at all on my hair beyond shampoo and conditioner and a bit of shine spray and my ends are always snipped every 7 weeks as my hair grows too fast.

Electra, my hair sounds similar to yours. I;m still umming and ahhing about this. I know GHDs are good, but are they, for my sort of hair really worth the £80+ extra when my hair is fairly Manageable.

I'm annoying myself now. If you buy a pair of straighteners and they are rubbish can you just take them back?
