Please help me find some lovely lovely fabric. I'd like something really striking but also want it to last...... I need 15 metres of fabric so bear that in mind wrt cost. Sofa is a two seater with seat cushions but no back cushions, little scroll arms and on mahogany turned legs and brass casters. It was bought from Heals by me for my first flat in 1984 and it is covered in Sanderson Tiger Stripe . Definitely time for a change.

I'm currently tempted by this GP & J Baker fabric

I love your choice as well!

Swedes · 26/11/2008 17:05

ggirl - Ooooh. Thanks, I like that too. I shall put it on my list of samples to request.

Any more?

What does anyone think of Willow Bough Minor - it's a William Morris fabric ?

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 27/11/2008 16:40

Does it need to be patterned?
What about the colours of the room, or will you re-decorate?
What colour/style/period is the rest of the furniture in the room?

I prefer the Morris to your first link, sorry.

Swedes · 27/11/2008 16:49

Room has 3 windows to N, E & W and I have some lovely curtains (made by me) that I don't really want to part with if I can help it. They are patterned green, cream, and ginger coloured in a pattern called Fleurs Indiennes by the Design Archives (now discontinued I think). Room is currently Farrow & Ball Dorest Cream (a pale ochre colour). Willowbough looks lovely with it all. My first link would mean new curtains and redecoration.

Anything suitable here at all?

Is it quite cold light?

EachPeachPearMum · 27/11/2008 21:35

Personally I would go plain, and use bolder cushions throws.

However... do you like this?
or this
or this
this actually sounds just like your sofa!

I like Nina Campbell's Kobana but I'm not sure there's a colourway close enough to your scheme.
again this is lovely.

Swedes · 27/11/2008 22:08

EPPM - Thanks. Will have a good look at both those links tomorrow. They look lovely.

No problem... now I need some pale porcelain blue curtains.....

Swedes · 28/11/2008 18:19

EPPM - Having a think about your curtains. Describe the room and other furnishings, please.

smellyeli · 28/11/2008 18:43

Sorry, I got the worng end of the stick from your title - I thought your sofa had been stolen and joyridden and the police had found it and you were having to send a special van to get it......

Thanks God the other MN'ers are more cultured than I......

Swedes · 28/11/2008 18:45

V big LOL at the sofa TWOCing.

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 29/11/2008 18:48

um- what is TWOCing?

Room- North facing, wooden floor (pale, not orangey), 2 sofas- sort of beige (according to Farrow and Ball....between elephant's breath and Smoked Trout- sounds delightful erm...) beech bookcases, and mirror.
Walls are a very pale porcelain blue- there's no F&B equivalent, and duck egg is too greeny IYSWIM- the walls are quite grey-blue. The closest I can find is Laura Ashley's Pale Parisian Blue. Above the picture rail is cream sort of like F&B Tallow. That is changeable... but am 32weeks pg, and cannot face changing decor atm, let alone fumes.

Currently curtains are plain cream, but they were bought in haste when we purchased the house (8mo pg) and they are a) boring b) not thick enough for winter, though perfectly adequate in warmer months.

I would prefer ready-made, for speed and cost, as it's cold now, and I'm not sure how much longer we will be in this house (looking to move within 12-18 mo max)

RustyBear · 29/11/2008 18:52

smellyeli - we're not all that cultured - I had the exact same thought!

thanks rustybear!

EAchPeach - Do you like florals? It sounds to me like the room is a bit blonde and you need a fabric to warm up the look of the room.

OP posts:
Anna8888 · 02/12/2008 11:05

I have floral armchairs - Bergère style with a cream-backed Rubelli fabric - with one very large charcoal velvet sofa and one, smaller, red velvet armless sofa. The red in the velvet sofa and the red flowers on the armchairs are a good touch of "brilliant" colour. I also have a silver lamp, which is great with the charcoal sofa.

So I would go for a plain fabric for your sofa since you already seem to have pattern in your curtains. Can you pick out a colour that is in the curtains you want to keep?

Swedes · 02/12/2008 11:22

Thanks Anna. The room is a playroom/family room. It is big - 28feet x 18 feet with plain pale ochre walls and plain carpet and a separate plain sofa. The curtains are patterned (they are a toile in green (not pale), ginger and cream) and there is a second two seater sofa which is plain. It can definitely take pattern. I like a mish mash of pattern and I think pattern will look much nicer than plain as there are already too many big blocks of plain and it's not a minimalist room. Your sitting room sounds very lovely btw.

I'll try and get a picture of the curtain fabric later.

Anna8888 · 02/12/2008 11:27

OK, I understand why you want pattern.

I have well-worn parquet point de Hongrie with the patina of age, and Art Déco style geometric moulures and double glass doors, so the room is quite decorative to begin with before putting anything at all in it. Hence need for fairly plain fabrics on the whole.

Anna8888 · 02/12/2008 11:29

Look at Rubelli fabrics, perhaps? Lots of florals/patterns but a bit different to English style chintz.

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 11:25

Swedes I am completely open to suggestions tbh. It is a very plain room- yes, but in a way that's good, as it takes seconds to make it look nice if we're having guests.
