I am not tall so why do I need to buy 'long' length skirts so as not to look indecent?!

I bought an 18" long skirt the other day, it looked fine on the model in the catalogue(who I am assuming was about 7ft tall), but on me it looks so short that I could not possibly wear it out without looking like a real tart! I am only 5ft 5in with short legs, so why do I have this problem?

Logically, short skirts should be longer on me shouldn't they?

Very confused. Anyone else similarly afflicted and/or got an explanation?

I have found this too and it is v annoying as I am quite tall 5'9" so even if I buy the long versions I find that trousers are above my ankles and the sleeves are always way too short! I think catalogues actually use short-arse models as opposed to the catwalk amazons. I have given up now and only buy stuff I can try on in shops first.
