Have just tried on my beautiful new silk evening dress from Monsoon but it clings everywhere due to static. have read some things which say wash it in fabric softener but dont want to do that yet as it's new. Any ideas??

Webstermum · 20/11/2008 18:34

Tried that but it was static too & just made things worse!

What about smoothing it over with bounce type sheets that you can use in a tumble drier?

I have heard that if your skirt clings to your tights you should put some hand cream on, rub it in well then smooth hands over tights to remove static. Therefore theory is that if you do the same but smooth hands over all clinging areas, should remove static problem here too.

However, obviously this not a problem if it's only skirt lining potentially coming into contact with remnants of hand cream but not sure it's so desirable for silk evening dress?!

Have heard about the handcream thing too and it used to work with me and my skirts years ago. Got a picture of the dress??

hairspary on your tights

Thanks will try both of these - here's hoping! Havent bought a dress for years since having ds1 so feeling a bit weird about wearing one anyway & don't want to be worried about it clinging in all the wrong places

Also it could be worse if you're standing on a carpet thats got a lot of man made fibres it it - carpets were like that where i used to work - horrid for static.

Cant believe i'm so bad at this cant attach the pic but its the Purple Lina Halter neck dress from Monsoon website

ooo lovely dress!!

I have had this problem before and what you need to do is put a small safety pin inside the hem. This earths the static and you will be static free. Much nicer smelling than hairspray!! (Which does work by the way)

It's worth investing in a can of anti-static sprary. I got one from John Lewis last year and use it a lot in the winter (due to wearing acrylic jumpers ). You could probably buy it online too. Costs about £3 and does the trick nicely.
