I want a hat but not a woolly thing that clamps my hair to the sides of my cheeks

and makes me look like an extra from Little Britain.

Any recommendations?

Ah hats. They look cute on children and ok (sometimes) on other people, but me? Oh dear oh dear.

And hat hair is a disaster. All static and squished.

I thought about ear muffs but they look even worse. Like two cusions strapped on my head.

Does the perfect hat even exist?

Fimbo · 17/11/2008 11:09

Yep hat hair is dire. Everyone I see always look stylish I end up looking like a gimpy twat.

Some people can whip off a hat and their hair tumbles out perfectly preserved.

I look like I've been shot through with 240v and any semblance of style is long gone.

Besides I have a bad memory of a (home made) hat my my knitted for me when I was little.

It was brown (nice) and had a little pointy bit at the top. Mum used to stuff the pointy bit with a tissuse so it stood up in a cute way. I didn't look cute. I looked like General Hindenburg.

yes - shop around and try lots on
all these rules still apply to winter hats - you probably need one with a brim

this shape is good but in something warm, or a trilby

Fimbo · 17/11/2008 11:22

Thank you Mrs B.

I do like Trilbys but feel I should start doing a Blues Brothers routine.

I got a cord baker boy style hat from M&S for £5 in chocolate colour, I've added a brooch to the front. It gives a bit of warmth, not too much though, and can be worn in rain 'cause it's washable. here quite big size though so not for pea heads, does have some elastic in back to help keep on. I like it anyway.

Thanks Flutter - will look in M & S. Do you still find your hair goes static with a baker boy style?

I have a beauty from Uniqlo - first time I've ever had a winter hat that didn't give me 'helmet hair'.

It's a pretty loose-knitted cap (mine's cream but they come in other colours) and its so light it leaves your hair in place, while at the same time being really warm. Its a sort of loose-shaped beret, you can flop it around to be different shapes (beany, if you must, snood, on the ears or off). I tend to wear it like a beret.

Don't bother looking in Wimbledon branch though - I went to get one for dd2 (that's how I know it really is chic - teenaged dd loved it ) and they only had one left.

I just bought myself this one and I feel rather chic dashing across the playpark in it

Fimbo · 18/11/2008 22:42

Now that I like Cupcake Queen - rather a lot actually.
