Yes yes, I'm judging wildly, but really, should people be wearing...

things just because they're fashionable? Or because they used to wear it when they were younger/thinner/worked in a different industry?

Right, I'll probably be slammed for being judgemental but... here are two that I have seen recently that I just wanted to scream "why?! Why?!" [disclaimer - am size 16 and need to lose weight. Am not most stylish dresser. But like to think I don't put my definitely too-big tummy, my least attractive feature, on inappropriate show].

On train this morning, an attractive, slightly large but by no means fat woman with big calves and thighs but nice neat little ankles was wearing... a mid thigh mini skirt and delicate little heels. It just emphasised the size of her legs, which considering she had nice ankles was a crime. A mid calf skirt would have been better?

In lift at work, city, the other day, I came across a woman (on a friday) wearing low cut hipster jeans with black g-string sticking out and tight tank top. She had flabby arms and a small muffin top, although was overall quite slim. Showed up unattractive bits AND inappropriate!

Anyone have any others?

I'd just like a pair of maternity trousers that STAY UP so I don't have to go around hitching up the whole time or looking like a pregnant tramp.

Upwind · 22/10/2008 15:43

LMD - maternity jeans are the worst...

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 22/10/2008 15:48

why will nothing just stay up and not end up round my knees after two minutes walking?

I'm in depair. I have a bump band, i have one of those weird pieces of elastic to extend waistbands, etc etc

I'm going back to smocks

Upwind · 22/10/2008 15:51

I have identified the problem with maternity trousers as my not having a waist to keep them up. So, I have been searching for braces in the shops to no avail - surely somebody must have tried this as a solution? Braces discretely used under jumpers to make maternity trousers into secret dungarees....

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 22/10/2008 15:54

I just can't help feeling like I should be standing outside a pub with a pint pot and my thumb hooked into them if I wear braces.

After all, I've got the beer belly!

I'm going for dresses, it's the only way.

Upwind · 22/10/2008 16:07

The braces would allow me to wear jeans with a tunic at least... if only I could find them...

Don't care about looking like a man with a beergut at this point

imaginewittynamehere · 22/10/2008 16:18

braces

I'm very tempted for maternity jeans myself..

Upwind · 22/10/2008 16:31

Thanks imaginewittynamehere!

But would they interfere with our swollen boobs? I can imagine myself creating a fashion disaster as I give myself the appearance of having three breasts... And having people posting on mumsnet about my bizarre new look...

CatIsSleepy · 22/10/2008 16:37

i thought the whole thong/arse-showing thing had gone away but have seen some terrible examples recently...
it's grim for gawd's sake

and I saw quite alot of the front of someone's thong/knickers the other day too which made my eyebrows shoot up so high I don't think they've come back down properly yet

imaginewittynamehere · 22/10/2008 16:37

Hmm. hadn't thought of that - perhaps you could wear them backwards?

I remember braces being trendy when I was about 14, I'm sure I must still have a pair somewhere

CatIsSleepy · 22/10/2008 16:38

and I have yet to find a decent pair of maternity jeans...LittleMy if you find any nice dresses let me know!

samsonara · 22/10/2008 18:38

I cringed at the thought of dungarees, but when I saw how comfy my preg friend was I got one, but was 35 weeks by then and wish I'd worn them sooner, if only someone would design some really nice ones i'm sure more mums to be would wear them if they suffer that maternity trousers falling down annoying thing.

krugerparkrules · 22/10/2008 19:03

I saw a women on the train on tuesday dressed TOP TO TOE in blue. blue shoes, blue stockings, blue skirt, blue top, blue coat and finished off, with you guessed blue ear-rings! It was a really sea/turquoise blue, not talking about all navy here, and not all the same shade! It really was over the top and i couldnt take my eyes off her - she wasnt that young either which didnt help!

differentWitch · 22/10/2008 19:12

upwind, could you wear the braces back to front so the narrow part goes between you boobs?

BloodyStranglingwithBling · 22/10/2008 19:19

mamaG, I bow to your mid calf skirt length expertise! I have quite nice legs so wouldn't wear mid calf anyway - I was just guessing on what would make someone with nice ankles but huge calves look good. hahaha.

I tried the whole braces and jeans thing with ds bump (braces from New Look 2005). Didn't work as are supposed to lie flat against skin, not allow aircraft to fly underneath-although did not try them backwards.

froggyfroofroo · 22/10/2008 19:48

i solved the maternity trouser problem by buying M&S high waisted jeans and using the eleastic button expander. they never fell down.

kettlechip · 22/10/2008 20:04

All maternity jeans suck. I ended up living in H&M linen trousers with one of those stretchy panels at the front for the duration of my pregnancies. Thankfully they were both summer babies or i don't know what I'd have done.
I really vividly remember the irritation of walking along holding the top of my trousers to stop them falling down.. glad i finally fit back into normal ones.

kettlechip · 22/10/2008 20:08

Oh and to go back to the OP I love to judge people too. Secretly, would never want to hurt feelings. But some people do leave me open mouthed with their interesting choice of outfit.

Must admit these are usually similar people to those that Grazia pick off the street and feature in their magazine for being very "on trend" so it might just be me
