Hairdressers - do you tip yours, if so how much?

I usually tip 10%, but wondered if this was normal?

Or could I cut out tips altogether and give them a bottle of wine at Christmas (my mum does this, but then she is a pensioner).

Would you tip if you're not having a shampoo or blow dry (I just have a wet cut, I stopped having shampoos and blow drys a year ago for financial reasons).

I go about every 2 months, so hopefully they won't remember if I'm a good, poor or average tipper?

Help me find my way around this social minefield!

I will be watching this, as I never know what to do, and find it really embarrassing. Do you tip the girl who washes your hair but not the stylist (if you're having wash-and-blow-dry)? Or what? It's worst if you pay by card and don't have any cash for a tip.

yama · 15/10/2008 14:04

I usually tip £5 for a £28 cut and blow dry.

I only go every few months though and my hairdresser will fit me in at short notice.

wotnopulling · 15/10/2008 14:06

i usually leave a fiver. and go very rarely! cut round there usually £40-£45 so i don't expect to get much change from £50, if any. i don't say who tip is for, which is cowardly as leaves them to sort whether it's stylist or washer. if i had to tip both. argh. too expensive!

mosschops30 · 15/10/2008 14:06

I dont tip, why should I??? No-one tips me when Ive done a good days work, or made them feel better, or cleaned up their vomit.

I will occaisionally tip in a restaurant if the service has been outstanding, otherwise I never tip

yama · 15/10/2008 14:08

I think hairdressers are taxed on their tips. Maybe I am wrong but if they are then not tipping costs them money.

Spidermama · 15/10/2008 14:11

It costs about £40 min for a haircut nowadays. I can't afford to spend any more.

When I felt more flush I used to but not now. It's embarrassing though.

Kaplumbagadort · 15/10/2008 14:14

No i don't tip. Can't afford to really. I have my hair done every 4 weeks. It only costs £15 for a dry cut luckily!

Bramshott · 15/10/2008 14:17

I tip about 10% for my haircut (twice a year) but never tip for DD's at the same place

FimboGotAxed · 15/10/2008 14:20

Nope don't tip. I have my next two appointments booked in - one in Nov and one in Jan so miss Christmas but may have given her chocs or wine.

penguinaballerina · 15/10/2008 21:28

So do you think I could get away with not tipping for a wet haircut for myself and daughter? (cost - about £15)Especially if I'm really nice to them?

Well that makes my pathetic tip of £1.50 look, well, pathetic! Haircut is £28.

I didn't know it was the norm to tip so much! £5!!! Shock.
