My hair is green - too much copper in my water - are there any shampoos that will stop the madness?

I understand that normal shampoos are all alkaline, which causes the copper to precipitate out of my slightly-acidic tap water and into my bloody hair!

I've tried Boots' "Sun, Swim and Gym", hair products, but the water still turns green - as does my hair.

Does anyone have any recommendations or am I really going to have to spend at least a night a week with lemon juice or tomato ketchup on my hair?

Thank you

Please? I can't be the only one, can I?

Oooh-not hear do this in a domestic situation but my (when it used to be) bloned hair turned bright green on holiday one year as did my sisters-all the chlorine.

I think it went back on it's own eventually once we got home but other than changing your tap I have no suggestions-sorry.

whooosh · 08/10/2008 14:06

Dye your hair black?

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 15:36

Thanks Wooosh. It has been suggested, but I refuse to let my house dictate the colour of my hair

wash your hair with bottled water?

serioulsy would filtering it through a brita filter work?

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 15:42

Don't think a brita filter would work - needs to be finer I reckon. I know there are filters you can get for the pipes which my landlord is supposedly going to do, but God knows how long that'll take.

Bottled water is a very extravagant option

Apparently there's a shampoo called Ultra Swim hold on

cremolafoam · 08/10/2008 15:43

ifyou are blonde try
this

bleurgh · 08/10/2008 15:45

ok there's a website but it's a chlorine removal shampoo rather than anything to do with copper

we have green hair which I thought was due to chlorine, also not doing that well with the boots one

I think the ultraswim is oz or US but I'm thinking about ordering over net

bleurgh · 08/10/2008 15:45

ps we have tried coke
best thing to do with coke IMO but it didn't work anyway

bleurgh · 08/10/2008 15:47

cremolafoam -- so it's stay green or go grey?
tough call....

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 15:47

Thanks Bleurgh - apparently it's the copper in the water that makes your hair green at the pool too - the chlorine disolves the copper in the water. But it's not the chlorine I want rid of. Argh!

cremolafoam - that could be a possibility but I feel it would just be covering up the problem rather than getting rid of it. But maybe it's the way forward.

Dropdeadfred · 08/10/2008 15:49

what about boiling water....then using it
would that take away the copper?

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 15:50

I used lemon on it last week - and that did work, but I'm out of lemons, so the next suggestion is ketchup or tinned tomatoes.

I will go from to to (hopefully)

OP posts:
NoblesseOblige · 08/10/2008 15:51

apparently, and i am very serious, if you apply ketchup in the manner of a conditioner, leave in for a bit and rinse off, this will help get rid of the green??

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 15:51

Not a clue - do kettles go green if the water's coppery? I need a scientist!

I like the way you're thinking outside the box DDF.

x posts. bring on the heinz

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 15:52

Spooky Noblesse! We have both been hearing the same odd things

I just don't want to have to repeatedly treat my hair with tomatoes every week. I want to be able to wash and go.

DO NOT BOIL THE WATER!!

just read that boiing the water will not in fact filter the copper out it can make the concentration stronger!!!

Dropdeadfred · 08/10/2008 16:08

you need something like this!

youknownothingofthecrunch · 08/10/2008 16:29

Thanks DFF - I will not boil it

I think I might research a few filters and drop them in to my landlord's house.

I guess there's no solution in the mean time
