Bored with brown hair - are lowlights/highlights a good idea?

I've got dark brown hair and pale skin/blue eyes and I've always kept my hair natural or used semi-permanent to take it a shade darker (usually with ideas of looking like Liv Tyler but end up looking like a goth!). Recently I've been hankering after more golden locks but all the examples of nice golden brown hair that I can think of are on nice golden brown skin-toned people (Cheryl Cole, Rachel Stevens, J-Lo etc).

Is it just a bad idea for pale people? Should I just stick to the dark brunette look? Help! Usually quite good on this kind of thing but just don't know anything about hair colour.

Good question. Not sure yet. I think I might go for a slightly lighter/richher all over colour and see how it goes. I'm a bit scared of highlights/lowlights, as they can be quite high maintenance. My plan is to make subtle changes, step by step - I'm a big baby and can't bear the thought of coming out of the hairdressers with a big stripey blonde and ginger mess!

Also, don't know about you, but I have long accepted that without a bit of slap / fake tan, I do look like a bit of a goth .

TBH, I've forgotten what I look like without makeup . I use a bit of gradual tan stuff in the summer but generally I go with the pale look but try to warm it up with a bit of blusher etc.
God, I went out without blusher the other day (in a rush to get to work)...I'd forgotten how dead I look without it!
I'm scared of the blonde and ginger stripes too.
I keep on looking around for good hair colour inspiration and I can't see anyone with my colouring who's successfully gone lighter without looking brassy.
