What tights should I buy? Black opaque is a bit boring

Inspired by a recent Mumsnet thread I have bought this skirt

I haven't worn a non work skirt for years and now need advice on what tights to buy please? Black opaques are so boring but I don't want to look like the proverbial mutton dressed as lamb

how about teal blue or purple, depends what you're going to wear with the skirt

JackieNo · 03/10/2008 15:49

Yes - opaque coloured ones, but as ggirl says, depends what top you're going to wear, and what shoes/boots.

JackieNo · 03/10/2008 15:49

Or something with some texture, maybe, in a more neutral colour.

JackieNo · 03/10/2008 15:53

Cable knit ones
Loads of colours

KatieMorag · 03/10/2008 16:00

i do like teal and purple but feel i might be a bit old for bright opaques . also not sure if i want to buy lots of pairs to match each top IYSWIM

i do like the idea of texture though - what colour would go with most things. apart from black of course.....

oh and shoes...i was thinking of these - what do you think? i prefer a small heel rather than flat

Looks good. If going for shoes rather than boots, I'd go for sheerer, rather than woolly, iyswim.

KatieMorag · 03/10/2008 16:04

ok. but doesn't that mean back to opaques? or is a rib ok?

not sure about boots. i have to confess to having worn the boots / wool tights/ mini skirt thing last time around so i think that means i'm too old to do it this time. hence conservative skirt

Stripes?
microfibre
diamond pattern
argyle pattern.

JackieNo · 03/10/2008 16:06

Give it a try, it's all in the way you wear it - if you're confident, go for it.

KatieMorag · 03/10/2008 16:13

really jackie? can a woman of ...ahem ...forty something wear argyle tights?

i am struggling not to be a middle aged frumpy mummy. a friend persuaded me to get the skirt on the basis that my legs are still good ( as opposed to the rest of me)

i rely on mumsnet to stop me sliding into this

OP posts:
JackieNo · 03/10/2008 16:17

Yes - definitely. Go for it .

KatieMorag · 03/10/2008 17:28

thank you jackie and ggirl

Grey - not marl but slightly marly - the £6.50 in M &S

Do not buy the Autograph £9.50 pure merino wool ones - they wore through on me in a couple of hours

Samantha28 · 03/10/2008 22:44

These patterned opaques come in brown or black Charnos

twinsetandpearls · 04/10/2008 00:26

I bought some pink tights from Debenhams the other week and they look fab on. Inspired me to buy more coloured tights.

Samantha28 · 05/10/2008 17:17

Today I noticed that Next are selling opaque tights in nice colours

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 05/10/2008 17:30

Am well over 40 but v keen on patterned, textured and coloured tights (at different times, not all in the same pair, natch). Am also keen, when feeling brave, on small-mesh fishnets. Am a sucker for the tights-matching-top thing and so have a sackful of tights!

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 05/10/2008 17:32

PS I thought a couple of those M&S skirts looked rather nice. Is there no hope for me?
