right i am an idiot and should really know better by now, but i decided yesterday it would be a great idea to dye my hair dark brown

so i went stupidly with dd to pick my hair dye managed to select the wrong colour after picking it up and puting it back several times thought it was the one i wanted and didn;t bloody realise until after that it wasthe wrong colour

anyway it was dark brown like i wanted but mahogany which is a nasty purple tint to it

i went and bought another dark brown colour and went over the top of it and now it;s toooo dark (i am quite fair skinned)

now it's not permanent dye ( i have after all learnt something) but can i dye over tge top again in a light brown?

will semi permanent dye colour a dark colour lighter? will it colour over another semi perm dye? will i ever bloody just learn?

Mustsleep please be careful about trying to lighten it with another dye the colours don't always work together and dying again so soon could really start to weaken your hair and make it much more likely to break.

Although more expensive I'd really recommend that you go to a hairdressers as they can strip the colour back to your normal shade or can make it the colour you want

Good luck getting it sorted

TheOldestCat · 02/10/2008 13:26

Oh dear, I've been there mustsleep.

Agree with SexyMilf - time to go to the hairdressers I think. They could at least give you some advice on your options.

It will lighten in a couple of weeks - can you wait that long?

CaptainKarvol · 02/10/2008 13:26

You won't get a dark colour lighter with a semi-permanent, sorry. And whatever you do, don't try to use a permanent dye at home to lighten it (I have very bad memories of looking like a faded ginger tom cat with patchy colouring after a bad home dye experience). A decent hairdresser should be able to sort it for you. Or just wash your hair a lot to get the semi-permanent tint out!

RhubarbEatsBiscuitsOnTheBog · 02/10/2008 13:34

Just wash your hair in very hot water. Soak it if you can.
Washing up liquid is a better shampoo for getting rid of dye.
Then sit out in the sunshine.

Hi

That is a common problem with dark brown colours - I've often made the same mistake myself. Mind you so have the hairdressers so I personally wou;dn't go back to get my hair dyed at a hairdresser as I can do a better job myself!

Apparently you need to select a COOL shade. The warm shades can have that nasty plum tint.

I would try to use a clarifying shampoo a few times - perhaps go for a swim as chlorine will take out colour (and fake tan for future reference). then buy a cool shade of dark brown - usually ash brown. Also try the john frieda brunette range which has a colourbooster thing.

Good luck I hope you get it sorted.

RhubarbEatsBiscuitsOnTheBog · 02/10/2008 14:07

I've yet to find a home dye that I like. I don't want to cover grey, I want to have bright colourful hair just because! But all the home dye kits are wussy colours.

I did buy some of that Live but it washes out after about 10 washes. Shit it is!

mustsleep · 02/10/2008 18:14

thanks everyone i thought that may be thecase

well i tried to do it a lighter brown which did not have the purple tint in it but it is still there

am now booked into the hairdressers for sat mrning and have had strand test so will find out if it will turn my hair to chewing gum first

mustsleep · 03/10/2008 10:04

right haven;t yet heard from the hairdressers so would assume that the strand test is ok

now can the hair dressers colour over the top of a permanent dye with a lighter colour?
if so how much lighter wouldthey be able to make it .... i take it blonde would be totally out of the question but woul they be able to take the black down to medium choc brown and get ride of the purple tinting?

If it's a semi-perm the more you wash it the more it'll come out, they only last for about 20 washes.

mustsleep · 03/10/2008 10:08

thanks, Cocolepew i stupidly tried to dye it lighter with permanent dye which was a lighter shade but actually made it darker

no the purple is cool, as in blue based. the dark brown is more likely to be warm, orange based.

rhubarb i have found the greyer i get the more lively the results of hair dye, it is just a bugger as it doesn't last as long. i agree the brighter the better.

MrsBick · 03/10/2008 10:16

anti dandruff shampoo will strip the colour better than anything.
give it a few goes, if it doesn't get noticebly better, go to the HD.

mustsleep · 03/10/2008 10:30

fishie do you mean no that the hairdresser wo;t be able to dye it that colour over the prupley one, or that i won;t be able to get rid of the purpley colour myself

i tried and you are right it did not work so am hoping nd praying that the hd will be able to sort it out

Hairdressers can take the colour out can't they? I get my hair done at the local college and in the past they have used what they call a tint to take out the remains of a nasty red colour I had on.

Helsbels4 · 03/10/2008 10:36

Oh I really feel for you because last year I dyed my hair black for a fancy-dress party (don't ask) and I used a non-permanent dye thinking that I could just wash it a few times the next day. Well it didn't wash out - for another nine months!!! I tried the clarifying shampoo etc but nothing shifted my dye, I just had to wait for it to grow out. I was distraught! Am tempted now to go for a darker brown for the winter but now I'm thinking maybe not! Hope you get it sorted.

mustsleep · 03/10/2008 10:58

thanks will let you all knowwhat happens!!

Cocolepew · 03/10/2008 12:47

Oh ok. You can get hair lightner, it strips the colour out of your hair and then you dye it again.

mustsleep · 05/10/2008 18:21

hi ok well i went...

i showed herthe colourthat i wanted on her hair colour swatch things and she went and askd an older hairdresser and she was like no we can;t do that as it won;t cover this colour .... the colour i showed her was a lighter choc brown and i explained that i wanted rid of the reddy tones

she then said that they could do it a brown that would cover the red and lighten it by putting lighter flashes through she then got the highlighting chart thing and showed me the colour that would do it which has neon orange and when i turned my nose up at that she showed me a bright red

i pointed to a poster on the wall and said it's that choc brown colour i want ... she was like oh well if you want that colour then do and reeled a load of colour numbers and percebtages off to the lass that was doing it

ok it is better but it is now nearly black still not choc brown but the red tones have gone... i have bought some different makeup so that i don't look as washed out but it's far too dark

i'm hopong that even though it's a perm colour that it will fade down a bit after being washed several times and lighten up a bit ... what do you think
