LetThemEatCake · 01/10/2008 21:48

is it serious?

LetThemEatCake · 01/10/2008 22:07

of course not! it;s a piss take! it's supposed to mildly amusing.

Having said that, I do eavesdrop on mums at the parks and cafes sometimes who sound suspiciously like this one.

OP posts:
MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 01/10/2008 22:09

As a satire of pointless consumerism, it's spot on.

southeastastra · 01/10/2008 22:10

lol sorry will read properly

LetThemEatCake · 01/10/2008 22:11

sighs.

Thank you MadBad.

Problem is, some people may think it's a lifestyle manual!

Is it an exercise in how many upmarket brand names you can squeeze into one paragraph? Is it advertising? Or is it satire? If it was real satire, would it have such blatant advertising?

(It might actually work on some people, because they might think it's for real)

For me, I get bored of reading all these designer names that I've vaguely heard of but never seen and can't afford.

It is quite similar to the "Dulwich Mum" blogs, have you read those?

Good luck though, I'm sure it will find a loyal audience!

bundle · 02/10/2008 14:13

meh

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 02/10/2008 17:28

Well the author says it's a satire, but even if it was intended as a heartfelt account of the life and thoughts of a high maintenance mummy, I read it as a satire of such a vacuous and empty-headed lifestyle. Even so, I can't believe that any of the brands mentioned would willingly be associated with the site if it's a spoof.

Anyway, as penguinaballerina says, Dulwich Mum has already lampooned this sort of vain Polly Filler twittering.

Ther's clearly a market for this stuff, so good luck to letthemeatcake!

LetThemEatCake · 02/10/2008 20:33

If you look in the archives of the yummymummydom section, you;ll see that Dulwich Mum used to write it. I've only just taken it over from her.

thanks for the good wishes penguin and madbad. It's not easy finding work that fits in with looking after 2 small children so this kind of thing is 'filler' in more ways than one I guess. Fun, irreverent, frothy and paid. Works for me even if clearly problematic for some others.

As I said, thanks for your good wishes, they are appreciated.

Well, I can't speak for others but it only works for me if it's a send-up. If I thought for a moment that it really was endorsing a lifestyle devoted to zombie-like shopping and flaunting one's designer labels, I'd be joining those who say that the revolution can't come soon enough!

Well done on finding a job you enjoy.

Twiglett · 02/10/2008 20:54

sorry, are you advertising your website? Isn't that a bit off?

All I got was a big pop-up

LetThemEatCake · 02/10/2008 21:01

no it's not my website Twiglett. I just do some writing for them and thought that some MNers might get a chuckle out of it.

If you close the pop up, you can see the 'article', if you want.

OP posts:
kt14 · 03/10/2008 14:52

Think you're a great writer, ltec, but that this kind of article may naturally have a fairly narrow appeal, even as a satire, because of the price and availability of the brands mentioned.

None of those brands would be recognisable where I live, and tbh that kind of lifestyle is totally alien to all but the most privileged few. The average wage in my area is a shockingly low £20k ish so a spend of hundreds on a bag or dress would be totally unthinkable to most. I'm considered posh for wearing a bit of Boden..

Even Ocado don't deliver round here yet - imagine!

Good luck with it all though, fab way to earn some money, v envious!!
