Should I buy an expensive bag??

Turning 40 next week and really dreading it for some reason. I know I have a great life and a great family...but 40?! YUCK!

My husband, being the pratical (and unromantic) man that he is, has suggested I buy myself something special that I would not normally spend money on.

Well, I really want a handbag that costs £500! I would never normally even consider spending so much, but it is a bag that will last for years and I have wanted it for quite some time. It seems like now is the time to get it and we can afford it right now.

Should I take the plunge even though I may vomit at the tills?

yes, without a doubt. I don't think there is any style item that so justifies a high price tag as a gorgeous bag.

which bag are you lusting after? My rec is Mulberry. Classic. I have the Bayswater and it is timeless.

I think it is really nice to mark big occasions with something special. My DH gave me a lovely European city break in a lovely hotel WITHOUT the kids for my 40th. Result: we are now expecting DS3!

yes - 40 is a birthday to celebrate!

bags - the only thing I would hesitate on is that every bag goes in and out of fashion - but what the hell if you love it for one year, then go for it

if it costs that much remember to pop it as a named item on your house contents insurance just in case it wanders off somewhere

As a one off to buy something you really want but would never usually buy is a really good way to celebrate and mark the occasion imo.

Also, I think that is a romantic sugestion of your DH!

Maybe you could tell him which bag so he can go out and buy it, to save you throwing up at the till and to make it seem more like a gift.

Show us the bag!!!!

I would personally rather spend the money on an experience than a bag (but am not bag obsessed at all)

eg a really great meal out or weekend away

I bought an Anya Hindmarch bag when I worked at a 'luxury' retailer in Manchester. It wasn't quite £500, but, oh, how I love it. Still, 5 years later!

Buy it. And yes, show us the bag.

I would but I would make sure it is not too fashiony iyswim, otherwise you run the risk of looking a bit like an out of date footballers wife. So it would have to be something with a classic kind of look about it, as opposed to something that looks 'in'.

It is a Mulberry Bayswater, which I think is a timeless style that I will get much use out of!

I agree that the Bayswater, perhaps in Chocolate, is absolutely timeless and will never go out of fashion. Do your research, I think you really need to see a bag in RL, it's hard to judge size, etc online.

Enjoy your bag, and your birthday - my 40th is next year, I somehow doudt my dh would even think of such a treat!

Yes! I have had my chocolate Baywater for 4 years, and it looks better with every year. You really won't regret it!

Yes!

A good handbag is a classic. You can use it for years and years and it will still look gorgeous and you'll be proud and covet it.

You will always respect it because it was so expensive and then in due time you'll give it to your children who will swank about it as 'vintage'.

So much better than buying a £20 fashion handbag every few months for 20 years, plus this will have special meaning as it's for your 40th.

Absolutely.

The Mulberry Bayswater is the most classic of classics - it will never go out of fashion, so well worth it imo.

I would go for tan, as it will go with pretty much everything. And you'll smile every time you use it.
