i order from Land's End, J. Jill, LLBean, Land's End, Target, Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma.

i once had a problem ordering from a couple of sites because i don't have a US credit card, but i just phoned them up and explained that i was an American living abroad and they were able to enter my address properly and keep my details on file and i never had any more problems.

i buy usually buy gifts for American friends and family online on US sites and have them sent to their homes.

i only rarely buy stuff here.

oh, i've bought wedding gifts from Crate and Barrell and Restoration Hardware and makeup from Nordstrom's.

i usually buy stuff in the US, have it sent to family and they bring it when they visit.

it is usually about 30% cheaper for most goods even with sales tax and shipping. Bedlinens especially are very good quality for lower prices on the whole.

i also order from Whole Foods, REI and lots of sites i find in Oprah magazine.

also any games (electronic) and exercise DVDs or equipment i get there.

my mother and sister supply most of the girls' clothing and it's usually Gymboree, Children's Place, GAP or Target. Sometimes Penny's and Sears.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 20:29

if you have any problems, ring customer service. their hours of service are very long, often 24 hours and they will LOVE you if you are British and have an accent and bend over backwards to help you.

brimfull · 27/09/2008 20:35

I have ordered kids stuff ffrom llbean,my mum sends it to me or brings it over.
Actually have just ordered a raincoat for myself from there,it's not beautiful but atleast it's waterproof.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 20:49

you will have that jacket for years, too, ggirl.

i have Land's End and LLBean stuff that is still going strong over a decade later.

i'm getting a new Land's End jacket for Xmas and can't wait!

waterproofing a real must around here.

my mama gets the girls' outdoor gear from LLBean and it is rugged.

TheBlonde · 27/09/2008 22:40

it is sooo much cheaper, I really miss shopping over there

LetThemEatCake · 27/09/2008 22:44

I know I always say it, but if you are shopping designer stuff, netaporter is way cheaper in the US

also check out www.chickdowntown.com

again. designer stuff but check out the sale section - big discounts plus a current offer with an extra 40% off sale prices (enter code at checkout)

some of the stuff works out at around £30 which is about as bargainicious as it gets

limited sizes available though

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 22:48

i miss shopping there, too, theBlonde .

i just find it better quality and cheaper [runs and ducks] and bigger selection.

malls were better, IMO. more family-friendly and comfortable.

TheBlonde · 28/09/2008 17:00

We are probably going over next year but my wardrobe can't wait that long
DH only buys stuff when we are there
There is a fab outlet mall near PIL

Anthropologie Prepare to drool...

Earlybird · 28/09/2008 17:22

Expat - have you got a link for your Land's End jacket? I'm looking for a new one too...

Earlybird · 28/09/2008 17:28

Have not ordered from them for a long time (so no idea about current styles/quality/sizing), but this site used to be (and maybe still is) the US equivalent of Boden:

www.jcrew.com/index.jsp

Also this site has some nice things:

www.garnethill.com

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 17:53

it's this one, EB. in red.

so i stick out as the big American i am .

absolutely perfect for an Argyll winter .

DarrellRivers · 28/09/2008 17:57

Oh expat I wanted to ask you an slightly off track question for a pregnant friend who is off to Boston in a few weeks
She wanted to do some maternity clothes shopping whilst she it there,
Any suggestions as to which stores she start in ?

Earlybird · 28/09/2008 18:10

Oooh Expat - I like that alot. I've never heard of a 'squall jacket' until now - sounds a heavy duty jacket for hardcore weather. Looks good value for the money too, and will definitely be good quality if it's from Land's End.

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 18:17

I can't wait to get mine, EB. A friend who moved here (dual national, just decided to come on over for a bit) has one and so I tried it out and it's terrific for cold, wet, windy weather - here, in other words.

DR, Great Expectations, A Pea in the Pod are two great places to start maternity clothes shopping - especially for work appropriate clothes.

The majority of major malls there will have no shortage of excellent choices for maternity wear, including department stores, at pretty affordable prices.

I have good stuff from Penny's and Sears, too.

Earlybird · 28/09/2008 18:26

Expat - you may have finally found a solution to the Mumsnet eternal quest for a stylish weatherproof jacket!

Here is another website with cute children's clothes. I've never ordered from them, but friends say it is a good source:

www.jandjchild.com/index.asp?SID=9D56814F5D5A47669D53EDC6660FFE65

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 18:49

i find it stylin' enough for me, EB, but the posh ladies on here might find it too outdoorsy.

yay, more for me!

Earlybird · 28/09/2008 19:01

Expat - ladies who drive most everywhere or are uber-fashionable probably would want something else, but it looks a great jacket for those of us who are out in the weather a great deal. Hope you enjoy it.

I've gotten out of the habit of mailorder/catalogue shopping. Used to do it all the time, but stopped for some reason. Aren't the returns a real drag? Maybe that's why....

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 19:03

well, i certainly wouldn't mail order shop at all if i were in the US, or even if we were back in the city.

yes, the returns are lame - have to do one tonight for the post tomorrow, in fact.

but whilst the shopping in the nearest city, Glasgow, is world class, it's not as cheap as ordering from US websites and having the goods brought over for free with relatives. .

brimfull · 28/09/2008 19:10

this is my fav pruchase form lands end everything I need in a coat it's fab
