best home hair dye kit for retouching roots ?

the credit crunch has hit home and no more trips to the hairdresser. So, what is the best kit to touch up mousey brown roots to blonde like the rest of my hair ? Any tips from home hair dyers ? My last experience was circa 20 years ago with sun in and am hoping things are a bit better now ?! Also, what shade do you choose as someone said they never turn out like the model on the box ? I have a lot of gold in my hair and don't want to go too orange.

Nice n easy root touch up. Only a fiver - brilliant for stretching out gaps between salon visits!

Sorry but your hair is something that is seen every day by everyone. I would continue with your current hair regime and cut out something else that will have less ramifications if it all goes wrong.

i use that L'Oreal highlighting kit every other month after reading recommendations here and it's fantastic! now 3 for 2 in Boots.

i went to Sally's to get stuff to highlight my hair at home.

i have to cut it at home, can't afford to visit a hairdresser, but as it's 50% grey and it's naturally very dark, it' vital to colour it.

some people really can't afford to have it professional cut and coloured despite cutting a lot of thigns out.

hi expat, I am in Edinburgh - is that Sallys's near Stockbridge by any chance ? I was thinking of popping in there and seeing what they recommended. Othewise the L'oreal kit sounds good. Jewels - I am with you but at £80 a time its getting too expensive to have done regulary.

i got my gear at the Sally's in Greenock, but i'm sure the stockbridge one will have what you need .

it does take about 2 hours to do, so you'll need a chunk of time to get it done.

but man, if you take your time and pay attention, it really does work, just like everyone on here said!

Totally understand mousemole, 80 quid is alot - I pay only 65 for a full head so that is more reasonable and enables me to get it done every 12 weeks. You should post on how the home kit works out! Expat Perhaps I dismissed the home kits too prematurely?

some people on here use them and it came up in a thread just a week or two ago, so i went for it!

my pal also uses it and her hair looks great.

i used to pay £65 for a whole head and a cut when we lived in Edinburgh but we really need to economise nowadays so the home kit it is .

sorry for incorrect grammar on Sally's !! Trigger happy on the keyboard. Expat - so what exactly is the kit you bought from Sally's ? Any chance you could link to the thread on it ? My hairdresser uses a L'Oreal cream mixed with peroxide all over tint and then a few highlights on top. Jewels, it's more the frequency I need to go which is the pressure on the purse strings. Since having the kids my hair grows ridiculously quickly and the re growth shows badly after 5 weeks. £65 for a while head isn't bad. Expat, I am getting quite excited about going to Sally's. Shame you don't live here anymore, you could have done mine !!

oh, sorry, i was using kit in terms of climbing/camping/outdoors stuff.

from sally's i bought a highlighting cap and this wee hook to pull the hair out to be highlighted, a couple of tinting brushes and some processing caps to put over my head whilst i wait for the highlights to work.

then i just used the L'Oreal highlighting kit in the silver and red box (mine's chocolate/macaroon, IIRC).

it did turn out nicely, but i took my time.

oh sounds really good. Will let you know how I get on. Just need to work out where I will get 2hrs free in the day light hours to do it !

i just went into Sally's with the L'Oreal and asked to be pointed over to where the highlighting stuff was.

i'd have it professionally done so i sort of knew what i needed, but the sales assistants were really helpful.

i did mine in the evening after the kids went to bed and DH was home.

I can second Expat, the L'Oreal is very good. I use it and always get complements on my colour, which really pisses off my friend who spends £80 on hers
