How long can you keep lipstick for?

I had a clear out today and bought some new make up

I have two MAC lipglass' (like lipgloss) but ive had them for about 4 years. Can I keep them or will they be full of bugs and germs?

Try 'em on and check for coldsores, impetigo etc over the next few days!! I have to say if I had paid enough for them I tend to keep them till they are unrecogniseable! Seriously, I think the lifespan is about 12 months though. GRR!

I guess it depends on if you're prone to coldsores etc.

When I was 20 I had a friend who used her mum's old lipstick from when she was about 20, she didn't get cold sores, surely the germs couldn't live on lippy? But it did smell a bit talcum powdery.

I still use the one I bought for my wedding. (Just celebrated 10th anniversary) Seems ok.

I have 10 year old lipsticks too. All seems fine. I have never had problems with old make-up. I also use blush and eyeshadow from my wedding 10 years ago. It's Chanel and I use it so infrequently-- would be a waste to toss it.

think official advices is 12 months but have some a lot older than that (although lipgloss does tend to go a bit gloopy after too long unlike proper lipstick).

The one to avoid keeping too long is mascara imo

oh yes I always get rid of mascara after 6 months.
So i guess it will be ok then. The MAC lipglass is very gloopy anyway and doesnt seem to have changed
