It's Scotland. It's September. It's baltic. It's time to buy me a thermal vest.

Where does one find such a garment? [Southern softie emoticon]

It's actually very sunny where I am but blowing a gale so I'm sitting in cropped trousers & t-shirt with the heating on.

I could just sit in a thermal vest and pretend it's really warm.

expatinscotland · 06/09/2008 15:35

those vests are too thin for the real Scottish winter.

you need to go to Tiso's or Blacks or an outdoor shop and get you a beefy Berhaus or Patagonia one if you want to stay warm all winter.

'You do not need a thermal vest for the winter!!! Just wear a jumper!'

Yes, you do need a thermal vest to live in Victorian house with original sash windows and crappy secondary glazing in Argyll in winter. Thermal leggings, too.

And wool socks, down slippers and flannel sheets.

Or a very fat purse to pay that enormous gas bill.

tiggerlovestobounce · 06/09/2008 16:16

Brora do them

pricey though

Habbibu · 06/09/2008 16:18

Am amused at your shock, Aims! Think they're a good idea, actually - gets cold and windy where we are (not as much as for you, expat, granted) and not so much bulk as a big jumper. Expat, have you got decent curtains in your house?

expatinscotland · 06/09/2008 16:22

yes, the landlords left some lined velvet ones - we close them when the sun goes down.

there were thin ones for the girls' room, but we had already invested in some lovely double-faced ones with a blackout liner sewn in between to the two fabric layers which are also fab for retaining heat when we were living in our last abode and they work well.

place really needs double-glazed, but the landlord will do that when they get back because the house also needs damp-proofed again.

GentleOtter · 06/09/2008 16:28

Today I am wearing
2 thermal vests
thermal long johns
thick trousers
two tee shirts
big fat jumper
two pairs of socks
mini hand heaters in both pockets

And the fire is on.

Either I have a thyroid problem or it is bloody freezing here.

expatinscotland · 06/09/2008 16:32

i've just got a tshirt with a sweatshirt over it, sweatbottoms and wooly socks with Crocs.

i'm pregnant, though, and always hot.

bikerunski · 06/09/2008 17:51

Howies' merino thermals are fab

cappy has a thread on this today too

MadamAnt · 06/09/2008 19:40

Expat - you're not just a pretty face! That's a great idea. Industrial strength insulation is what I need. We're in a semi-derelict Georgian house (12 ft frigging ceilings). It's ridiculously draughty.

Those fancy vests are lovely, but ££££.

Will go and share bodily warmth tips with Cappy on her thread.

Dunnes do long sleeved ones a bit cheaper than m and S

expatinscotland · 06/09/2008 19:55

i cannot wait for my flannel sheets to arrive!

bliss!

primark are already selling flannel and fleece pj's, folks.

i have 8 pairs of wool socks and the down slippers i bought from LLBean in 1994 are still going strong!

bikerunski, they look gorgeous but eek at the price! £50 for a pair of leggings

GentleOtter · 06/09/2008 20:44

cotton pyjamas do just as well as thermals.

MadamAnt · 06/09/2008 20:46

Surely they're too baggy GO? Or perhaps my clothes are too tight to accommodate them

OP posts:
GentleOtter · 06/09/2008 20:55

No one ever sees them MadamAnt. That said, I wear so many layers that if I fell over it would be a job getting up again.
Ok not the sexiest of underwear but really comfy
