As was at Bobbi Brown one two days ago. She did my make up. V nice blah blah blah then got out a set of brushes, said 'You'll need these' and tilled them up.

£175!!!!

Fuck me. I nearly had a haemotoma!!

you see. i really want to update my make up. i seem to have worn the same type of colours since i was 15.
i really want to go and get my make up done at one of these counters but i am terrified of how much it will cost.

£175 is just bloody ridiculous.

moondog · 01/09/2008 23:25

Well I did.
Obv.
But airy assumption that i would buy is what got me.

i'd like to, too, mamazon, but same thing. and then it's like going to a hairdresser's - even if you buy all that stuff you'll never be able to replicate the look.

they always do the concealer, the primer, the foundation, the blusher, etc.

just could not afford all that.

pointydog · 01/09/2008 23:31

Yes, That's their job description.

moondog · 01/09/2008 23:32

Wot a boring job though. standing about.

OP posts:
Mamazon · 01/09/2008 23:35

i might see if it would work if i went in with by base done and say..right i just need eye shadow, blusher and some lippy.

oh and i want it for under a tenner.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2008 23:37

you can't even get a lip liner for under a tenner at Bobbi B counter, though.

Overmydeadbody · 01/09/2008 23:38

yes it's normal, it's their job lol

Can't you go and have your make-up done and then just walk away without buying anything though? Surely you're not under any obligation to actually go through with a sale after listening to all their advice?

pointydog · 01/09/2008 23:38

standing about but looking guuuurrrddd

they ust do a tubeof foundation a week.

Birdly · 02/09/2008 08:17

Lapin - I love Victoria. Think we should make her PM!

"Eyes are popping out while lips are receding"

Sally - it's got to be the best song ever written, hasn't it? Now, where are those tenors from the male voice choir...??

expatinscotland · 02/09/2008 14:20

ah, but mamazon, i think the people who work the counters get theirs for free, or at a huge discount.

beautyscientist · 03/09/2008 10:25

I think it is logical that if you buy from a counter with personal service you should pay more for the products to cover the cost. And someone who is really enthusiastic about their products is likely to want you to buy a lot of them.

Having said that, I really think that the people on these counters could really do with some better training. I have always been appalled by the rubbish they come out with whenever I speak to them.

regularlyoverwhelmed · 03/09/2008 10:31

I always trot out the old "I want to see how my skin reacts before purchasing" line after they've done it - they can't argue with that and it gives you time to see the effects in cool light of day and actually think about which bits you really want/need without the sales expectation. Also (and this is very important for me) you get to see how the stuff wears and whether the foundation turns into shiny mess after an hour, or not...

yes and it is also normal for the ladies to have orange faces and bright red lipstick on too

LittleDorrit · 03/09/2008 14:11

Agree that some of them are not properly trained ! Last year I booked myself in for a makeup session using Chantecaille at Space NK - I was feeling bad about myself and needed a pick me up. The girl doing it was described as a "make up artist". Anyway, the foundation she chose for me was a shade too dark (I knew as I had used it before, and also others later confirmed it too) and she put all this blusher and bronzer on me, and I really looked terrible. On top of it all, when she had finished, she said "look - doesn't that take yeeeeaaars off you !". I was speechless. I thought I looked pretty good for 34 and didn't need to have that many years taken off !!! Needless to say, I left as quickly as possible and only bought a blusher to get my booking fee back.

beautyscientist · 03/09/2008 15:51

I think regularlyoverwhelmed advice is pretty good regardless of whether you want to save money or not. Everyone is different and even the top brands might not work on your skin for some reason.
