Nice coat for a secondary school starter that she will WEAR

I have to take the DDs shopping tomorrow for shoes and coats. DD1 is just starting secondary school and will need a coat that is warm, waterproof and will fit in her (very small) locker, as I know she will refuse to take it otherwise. It also needs to look cool. Is this too big an ask? I know most of them don't seem to bother with coats but I think she ought to HAVE one at any rate.
Any thoughts on this mothers/teachers of teens?

We got dd2's coat in Zara last year and it should still fit her this year. Might be worth a look? DD1 just wears a suit-type jacket (Emo style) and takes an umberella if it rains; she will not countenance wearing a "sensible" coat at all but fortunately we only live 5-10 minutes walk from school.

DD1 has a school fleece/sweatshirt/hoody thing and also a raincoat/cagool thing which she has never worn. they just get cold and wet and no amount of parental teeth gnashing makes them wear coats.

We got a lovely black pineapple coat in debenhams was a bit pricey but at least I know it is coolish so she will wear it

Most girls at my daughters secondart school dont wear coats either. Its an all girls school.

Infact the lady in the school uniform shop suggested not even getting her a coat until October or November

So my daughter will be starting school next week coatless. Not what I had in mind at all, but at least come October there might be more choice around, and she will have an idea of what the other girls are wearing.

when i was at school we wore the school hoody as a coat with a brolly if it rained or something like these - never anything waterproof though.

sorry to say this, but don't spend too much as you are probably wasting your money

my dd has been bought countless coats

she has never worn any of them, even in the depths of winter except after a very huge row

it just isnt cool, her and her cronies make do with short sleeved blouses and very uncosy polyester school blazers

she does insist however, on an umbrella

Agree with Cod that peacoats are great for school - I got one for my daughter (2.10 then) last year and it looks fantastic and will last another year. Think they are great on all ages and go well with lots of things.

You are probably right. Skinny Parisian teens don't have boobs so not an issue round here

OK, will look for peacoat. The town I am hitting has Zara, Gap, H&M, Next, New Look. She will want to buy stripey black/pink stuff from New Look in flammable-looking fabrics. I will want her to have something practical in navy from Gap. Hmm.
It is also the shopping trip for the first bra and the first pair of secondary school shoes.
I feel weak already.

DD1 has no boobs yet. Bra is simply to avoid PE changing embarrassment as all her friends do have boobs.

Good luck with getting some wear out of it. My ds1 stopped wearing coats (or sweatshirts) the minute he started at secondary. He literally comes home in the snow/pouring rain/howling gale in a t-shirt.

And so do all the other pupils at the school. Weird.

We have been shopping for long-sleeved t-shirts and thick hoodies for my stepsons today.

They do wear them - but only if they are from the ruinously expensive brands they like best. Grrrrr.

Bought coats the last three years for DGD, from age 10 -13, she never wore any of them, she can go cold and wet this year!

Nice links, but she is a slight 11-yr-old, so much to her disgust cannot wear even an adult size six yet. She longs to be big enough to wear Topshop.

try h&m they do good coats quite cheap and they do adult like clothes in the kids section

Just to update this, she chose a nice black peacoat in H&M. And I managed to persuade her into sensible school shoes by buying her a pair of pink suede flatties from New Look for the weekends.
And because they are PINK, she can't ask to wear them to school
