Feeling brave - pic on profile - advice on hair & make-up please?

I've got the big 3-0 birthday coming up soon and people are asking what I'd like...I haven't bought any new make-up or changed my hairsyle for ages so thought I'd ask for vouchers so that I can have a pamper.

Trouble is, I haven't really got much of a clue - I've used gold eyeshadow & black mascara for the last 10 years. I use tinted moisturiser and an illuminating concealer, and that's it, I've never found a lipstick I like. I've been to a couple of department store make-up counters for consultations but always feel far too made-up afterwards, and not really inspired to buy the products they have recommended.

Sooooo, and be as honest as you like - what do you think I should spend my money on? Any products, tips, styles you think would suit me?

Birmingham area...so Manchester's not THAT far if he's really brilliant! I like my hairdresser but she's scarily young & trendy so if I gave her free rein (reign?) she might asymmetricalise me or something!

brimfull · 08/08/2008 23:41

Always fancied MAC, it looks like an art shop the way they have it all laid out. Cost has put me off before but seeing as it will be a birthday tear...

ggirl, you are confirming what others have said and I have suspected for a while, so spare those blushes!

go for a noticeable change. get a full fringe cut in your hair with shaped sides, get an inch or two cut off the back and soften the front with a few layers. This allows you to tie up your hair and keep it loose, the fringe will knock five years off you and the more modern cut will encourage you to experiment with the make up tips others have given.

  • get a t-section of blonde highlights, but not too brassy and yellow to lift the colour without a full on change. In the winter introduce red as well for a more autumnal look

And you look very lovely and young too [envious]

Having said taht, uyour colorings similar to mine. I always use brown mascara/eyeliner, browny/goldy eyeshadow, and pink lipstick (sort of my natural lip colour but more intense IYSWIM?).

If you aren't used to wearing a fair amount of make up, you will feel over made up when you do.
My friend and I do really 'faceless' jobs(Police and Prison Service), so when we get all dolled up, we tend to feel a bit like transvestites and I know this is a common feeling.
Open your mind to wearing more and you'll probably feel better about it, do it more often and you won't feel over done so much.

OLIVIASMAMA · 09/08/2008 01:30

You look lovely - really fresh faced.

I like to look as though I've got my "face on", I like looking "made up", it's my look but you look very natural and pretty, I really wouldn't change too much at all but do experiment with your make up, just don't go out and spend a fortune on it get it done by the girlies in the department store first to see what you think and from past experience don't go too drastic on changing the hair, I remember the feeling of "yes it's gorgeous, thankyou, get me the hell out of here I'm dying, it's the worst haircut I've ever had.... oh and not before I've paid the bill of £80.00 plus" only too well!
