Is it acceptable not to wear floor length dress for black tie occassion ?

I have a gorgeous dress but the hemline is above the knee at the front and to my calf at the sides ?
Do i have to wear floor length frock please ?

sounds fine but depends on the event

drinks, dinner, wedding recep, cocktail party = ok

at a ball you may find more people wear long things, but unless it's actually white tie (full length + gloves) the dress you describe sounds fine

Its a charity ball and i have a couple of floor length ones but feel like an overaged cinderella and woukld much prefer my fav black dress .I`ll put a blaxck silk nwrap around the shoulders to dress up a little x

I don't do 'long'. I always look like I've raided the dressing up box in long frocks.

When I see women in long dresses very few of them look good. Often they look frumpy in them.

personally i always wear a sari to black tie events. always looks fab
makeup, hair and accessories will turn any nice dress into a black tie outfit

I'm thinking of ladies who dig out the faithfull old Laura Ashley dress circa 1982 for every ball just because it's 'long'.

Oh blimey I love long, the old world glamour, any excuse.

When our ship comes in I am going to spend my life organising formal charidy balls to give me the chance to dress up all the time.

Went to on recently where there were sooo many ladies who not only didn't have long dresses on but had hardly made an effort at ALL. Why go to a black tie do if you are not going to dress up??

A very posh cocktail dress will just about do but long dresses don't always = frump.

Black tie doesn't mean posh anymore though, does it? Its just a glorified disco.

Lol yes the ones I've been to are glorified disco's it's true. Quite a relief cos dh and I aren't really up to a foxtrot.

We go to quite a few 'balls'. I never wear long, I'm too short to carry it off imo.

I have quite a few cocktail/strapless/prom type dresses that I wear instaed.

I think more poeple at most 'dos 'I go too are wearing short rather than long. But both are acceptable.

I think it's just 'evening and dressy now.

I always like red OR black (never together) both very dressy.
