Walked through it today, God, it's awful. No one was in it. Some of those clothes are criminal. Who buys them ffs?

Per Una has definitely gone downhill. I went in M&S last week with £35 of vouchers I had given to me, still have the vouchers. Couldn't find a thing I liked

fizzbuzz · 13/07/2008 12:30

What's Target?

Desiderata I go to charity shops too but never used that excuse....will do now though Most of my clothes that people comment on come from them.

Celery · 13/07/2008 12:38

All the women over 50 were wearing Per Una at a wedding I went to the other month. Well, most of them, anyway. Apart from my mother in law, who was wearing something far far worse. Jaw dropped open when I saw her,

LisaLessLumpy · 13/07/2008 13:27

You have to tell us now, you do know that don't you

Celery · 13/07/2008 14:57

If only I could find a link, but it was a one off from a boutique. I think her friend "advised" her. The friend is a f*cking nightmare anyway. My MIL is mid-sixties, grey hair, overweight. The outfit was very pink and very frilly. Believe me, the Per Una wearers looked very stylish and fashionable in comparison. Ooooh, if only I could post an actual picture, but that would just be too cruel and dangerous.

pagwatch · 13/07/2008 15:05

when they started per una their stuff was quite nice but for the last few years it has been terrible - crinkly cheap fabrics and just totally over styled. It is like really crap american clothing for kids - why have one flouncy ribbony bit when you have have eight and a sequined motif too.
Yuekkkk !

BirdyArms · 13/07/2008 20:14

Monty 27 - to me (and I am prepared to admmit it may only be me) dog's dinner and dog's breakfast are 2 different things. Dog's breakfast = complete mess, dog's dinner = tarted up.

My mother in law always buys me Per Una for my birthday, at the end of December, so if I try to return anything it has been reduced to peanuts in the sale and I end up keeping it and feeling I ought to wear it when we visit her but really not wanting to.

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/07/2008 20:17

crikey, I'm, approaching 50 and I wouldn't touch Per Una - it's all too flouncy,weird colours and bitty - nah !

brimfull · 13/07/2008 20:23

M&S is shoite

autograph and limited edition very very occasionally have something decent but the rest is overpriced crap or underpriced tat

TsarChasm · 13/07/2008 20:26

Per Una sometimes looks like the reduced rail in a charity shop..except for the price. How can they charge what they do??

fizzbuzz · 13/07/2008 20:27

What happened to that "young" range they introduced? It lasted for about 2 seasons.

Don't think the Per Una designers know the meaning of minimalist elegance.

When it came out it was really quite good, and was M&S's new young range. Now it looks more dated than the rest of their stuff. I think Autograph has taken over where Per Una should have been

Oh dear , I am sitting in here in a Per Una top from 3 years ago and a cotton skirt I bought two weeks ago and I'm in my 40s - am I really past it???

tb73 · 15/07/2008 23:30

Ha! No offence, my MIL and her friends wear Per Una and they are in their 50's and a few in their late 40's. Mind you, she also wears more make-up than a teenager and is very self-obsessed, recently stating 'it's true, when you are 50, you become invisable to men'! Ahem, she is married!

Perhaps Per Una is for women who wish they were teenagers but are infact...... - fill in the blank if you dare!

janeashersbookofspacecakes · 15/07/2008 23:36

I'm always surprised they haven't yet scrapped it. It's always appealed to a different market to what i think it was intended for, women in their 50s. they're always sniffing round it. Must be successful to keep going.

zippitippitoes · 15/07/2008 23:38

per una is one of those shops that makes me think cruise ship

a lot of monsoon is the same

tho i did buy a black dress in there recently and it was nice

i am 51 and not invisible to men

i shop in new look river island mainly

fircone · 16/07/2008 11:54

ha ha "cruise ship" - that's exactly right.

I read somewhere that M&S realise that the ACTUAL customer of Per Una is older than the SUGGESTED customer, because people still want to feel "I'm a little bit stylish".

I had a moment of madness and held up a Per Una skirt against me (big mistake: many flounces not good on 5'3" person). I shot off like a frightened rabbit when I saw a 70-year-old holding up exactly the same skirt and husband in beige anorak with hands behind back saying "Very nice, dear, why don't you treat yourself?" AAAAGGGHHH!

...and it's very overpriced. Yes, why all the frills, probably to cover all of the ...?!

Celery - you must find a way to show us.

HarlotOTara - Perhaps you could make some nice bunting out of your per una clothes for the kids and then get down to Top Shop and utilise their free personal shopper service (although this is only in the larger stores).

HarlotOTara · 19/07/2008 18:50

I have been telling my very stylish almost 18 year old daughter that I need an update but not sure I am brave enough for a top shop personal shopper! I do seem to spend a lot of time there tho', mainly holding the bags.
Not all Per Una is frilly tho (in my defence!)
