jewellry for dd 13th birthday - any ideas?

Dd is thirteen next week, I would like to get a piece of jewellry for her - she doesn't have her ears pierced and would prefer a necklace as opposed to a bracelet/bangle type thing - I'd just like her to have something timeless/classy but not horrible ostentatious to remember her teenage years by - any ideas? i don't have the faintest - don't want to go to ratners ;) want to spend around £50-ish.

What about a silver pendant of some kind. Links or Tiffany type but can get them cheaper.

Could do a plain locket or perhaps her initial (Links do initial charms you can wear on a chain).

I found a really pretty pendant at the Selfridges sale that I am keeping for my dd's birthday. It says I Love You and is made from silver love hearts. I think it is so sweet!

Website here

They do sell them elsewhere, so you could surf around for a sale.

joliejolie · 03/07/2008 00:37

Forgot to say that they also engrave them.

A silver or gold pendant would be nice, go for as simple a design as possible so it won't date too badly.

I got my dd one of these for Christmas a few years ago and we have been adding charms to it for birthdays /christmas since. It is very pretty and the charms are great too.

Sorry! Read your post as you wanted a bracelet rather than a necklace - it's too early to read properly!

PerseRaniSnape · 03/07/2008 08:42

i was thinking tiffany - is links kind of the same thing ( never heard of them, not a jewellry type of woman myself, but i seem to have birthed one. )

this sort of thing is nice - lots of heart/flower ideas here

joliejolie · 03/07/2008 09:12

Tiffany is good, but over your budget. Links of London is getting really popular and I have even seen them sold in upmarket shops in the States. They have really cute charms you can add and they get a new selection fairly often.

The only thing I will say is the bracelet usually has to be sent off to put a new charm on and that can take a few weeks! They do have the sweetie version where the charm can go straight on.

DonutMum · 03/07/2008 09:27

Oh, definitely a Links Sweetie bracelet. They are lovely and can be added to.

StellaDallas · 03/07/2008 10:40

I like this type of thing where you can add beads at birthdays and for special occasions. Lots of teenagers I know seem to be wearing them.

PerseRaniSnape · 04/07/2008 08:50

i think we've settled on a links sweetie bracelet ( yes, i know that isn't anything like the original question!) being an avaricious little thing he likes the idea of continually getting more presents and it's a nice bribe for doing well in exams etc thanks for all of your suggestions ladies - very much appreciated!

I meant to answer this yesterday, but if she wavers from a sweetie bracelet (or you want something for her for Christmas), try www.etsy.com. It's all handmade stuff by independent artisans, and you'll get a lot more for your money than you will at a retail place.

The variety and the quality are staggering.

Whizzz · 04/07/2008 15:55

I am happy to make you something if you want something personalised
I've made a couple of personalised sterling silver charm bracelets this was for a mates 40th

PerseRaniSnape · 05/07/2008 14:35

thats lovely Whizzz I would prefer something i can add to over the years though and she's now a bit determined.

i forgot about etsy -

off for a shufti.
