Very warm coat recommendations

MavisTheMonkey · Yesterday 14:40

I am on the search for a new winters coat and the top criteria is that it needs to be really warm. I am on chemo and I’ve lost quite a lot of weight so I am feeling the cold more than I ever have before.

I am not worried about waterproofing, and I need the coat to enable me to sit outside for a few hours each week to watch my kids do their sports activities.

I am 5ft and a size 10, so nothing too long and ideally something that looks nice-ish but as I said warmth is the top priority.

I just got a Puffer Coat from Hiking Patrol that is very warm

Second Didriksons and wool duffel coats. I prefer my non Gloverall duffel as it’s longer and falls mid calf. I do have a Gloverall pea coat though and it’s very good quality

I am your height and build and I can only buy a petite fit coat. I wonder if you’re the same. The recommendations you’ve had are great. But I think the sleeve length and where the waist/hips hit will not be proportionate on you. Lands end do petite for coats, you could follow the advice on warmth ratings when you look at their online selection.

I have this coat from monsoon. I wore it in Edinburgh last week during storm boelo and I was still cosy. I got it in an outlet shop for a lot less than the main shop so might be worth seeing if there's an outlet centre near you.

It seems to be v hard to find proper wool coats now! I know people will suggest Vinted but I find it so tedious trying to even find the right size let alone the right material composition

Hobbs have lots of long wool coats.

HorseandHeron · Yesterday 18:18

The Uniqlo long puffer coat is very warm. I wear it a lot. If you have their heat tech long sleeved tee and a cashmere or merino jumper underneath, you will be very warm.

I like the Uniqlo ultralight down. I will layer a gillet under my long coat and it’s lovely and cosy without being heavy and bulky. Their Heattech layers are so effective as well, a thin base layer that stops you getting cold. I won’t go back to wool coats while Uniqlo are selling their ultralight down coats!

This is what I am talking about too. Uniqlo down lightweight with heat tech and merino layering. Affordable and super warm. Also not bulky.

Eddmr · Yesterday 18:21

I would also recommend cashmere wrist warmers and make sure that you have thick soled boots.

Gingerbreadlattetoppingsontheside · Yesterday 18:23

Decent down gillet (tog 24)

Wear it under any coat.

The uniqlo down coat is warm but down under a windproof or wool coat is warmer. I often wear my long length uniqlo down under a trench if I want proper warm.

Yy to a Thermal vest and long John's or primark fluffy themal leggings.

Nylonflares · Yesterday 18:34

my other top tip is to wear thick soled shoes to keep your feet warm, really helps

EverythingIsCrispy · Yesterday 18:40

I agree with @Itsbeenalongtimeincoming
I’ve got a long superdry one that is bulky but so warm. Layer a heated gilet underneath (the battery should last a couple of hours) and you’ll be toasty

MavisTheMonkey · Yesterday 19:00

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I am definitely sold on a heated vest / gilet and am leaning towards a long down puffer as opposed to a wool coat as I’m not moving. Plus the stables are often dusty and I think a puffer type coat is more wipe able!
I’ve also taken in board the comments re vests, socks and decent footwear.

have you looked at Hollister? I have this one and it is really warm, but it is also soft and comfortable to wear. They often have very good sales on Black Friday so might be worth waiting a couple of weeks .

Have a look at Lands End down filled coats. Ive had 3 (changing sizes and the first relegated for dog walking), very light to wear but lovely and warm. Machine washable and go in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls.

Hobbs have lots of long wool coats.

As do Jigsaw.

Thank you. These are exactly the type of conditions I need to battle! A little bit more than I had wanted to spend but I might stretch the budget for it

Uniqlo has similar

shredandmulch · Yesterday 19:14

I can recommend this. I’ve even used it as an extra duvet on a bed in a freezing hotel room!

Thingamebobwotsit · Yesterday 19:24

As a horse rider I second the down coat suggestions. But take a look at Uniqlo too. They do some amazing layers - cashmere blend thermals as base layers, and little puffer jackets and down gilets you can layer over your clothes and under your top coat to really trap the warmth in. I may have been known to double-down on occasion! Wool socks are a must, and sealskinz gloves. Or leather fleece lined ones.

Natural fibres, wool or down plus layers are your best bet. Everything else pales in comparison.

Even without chemo (hope you are doing ok), the cold at this time of year seeps in so look after yourself.

stripeydonkey · Yesterday 19:25

I have this one (it is pricey but insanely good, I'm also 5ft2 and it's long but the length is key to keeping you mega toasty. They do shorter lengths too. This is what most people use where I live (not UK).

stripeydonkey · Yesterday 19:28

Sorry, wrong link, this is the most warm version of that series (which is the one I have) but tbh that other thinner one would probably be fine in the UK...

I live where it can get down to -30c and I wear a North Face down coat. They are washable if you’re very careful.

this is the updated version of mine (mine is about 10 years old! )

Stay warm and well!

AluckyEllie · Yesterday 19:50

@Coeliacsmum nice to find another Gloverall wearer! I second that they are the warmest coat I’ve ever had and great at blocking out the wind. I’m a bit bored of the duffel now but as soon as it’s bitter I just have to get it out again

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · Yesterday 20:14

Maybe some lambs wool insoles for your boots would help too.
