All I have is workout clothes, work clothes and casual baggy jeans and jumpers.

I went to a tasting menu place last week. I wore a long black silk skirt, lacy cami under a black cashmere v neck jumper. I added black high top converse and an oversized burgundy (fake) leather jacket. Vintage Gucci bag.

I have a few silk shirts - would usually wear one of those with jeans if I was going somewhere nice. Summer is easier as I have lots of nice dresses.

I don't own any kitten heels but I do have various pairs of boots with heels. Increasingly I cba to wear them (like others on this thread, I live in London and have to navigate a walk and public transport to go out).

I’m going out for dinner tonight, just a casual curry place. A friend is driving so I’m taking advantage of this and wearing heeled suede boots. Paired with black tights and a leopard print sack style dress (very old M&S).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/10/2026 17:43

Leather jacket and a tiny Longchamp handbag.

I would wear a nice dress and heels. I like to dress up when I'm out with a man.

If your 'meal out' is a date, I might go for something different though. Is it a date?

What type of restaurant are you going to?

Not a date date. With my husband of many years. But I've noticed I struggle and have a little panic if I'm meeting my friends or sister for an evening bistro meal or whatever.

These days it’s jeans, kitten heels and I’m favouring a high neck chiffon halter top currently or sew through blouse and a fancy bra.

StarlightLady · 31/10/2026 07:02

I rarely wear trousers or jeans and tend to live in dresses. I love my dresses, no matching tops with bottoms and they come in winter weight with long sleeves and dummer dresses.

So, personally l’d go for a “posh frock”.

What shoes do you wear with them?

OP, l’m boringly practical when it comes to shoes, l tend to go for a court shoe, ankle boots (winter), sandals (summer) or even ballet flats. I don’t do heels.

l like to thing that if l get it right from shoulders to calf, l can get away with a little more below.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/10/2026 09:02

Pointy kitten heel boots are a useful staple OP. They’d work well with some wide leg trousers, a long skirt or jeans (inc. slightly cropped balloon jeans.

I have short legs, I tend to err towards nicer jeans or trousers, or a short skirt with opaque tights - for the latter I’d wear a chunkier flat shoe or a brogue. I’ve also got a couple of long satin skirts - I wear them with knitwear usually and a chunky flat boot.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/10/2026 09:17

The dressiest I get, shoe-wise, is a mid heel ankle boot. For most places, I just tend to go with DM boots. I’ve got some block heeled over the knee suede boots, but never quite know what to wear them with.

I’ve tried over knee boots but l can’t comfortably sit down in them. I don’t know if it was the boots or my legs.

I like wearing dresses, but i struggle with boots that aren't heeled and it seems flats/chunky heels are "in" at the moment (i might be wrong!) which make my already chunky lower half look chunkier?

There are a lot of ankle boots with kitten heels around.

I have a wardrobe full of Monsoon dresses - there's always one that works. This is what I wore out to dinner and theatre this week.

Typically silky trousers with Hotter Whisper flat ankle boots, a really heavyweight scoop neck T-shirt and a soft jacket. I have a black velvet jacket and an off white jersey one and they do me well for a lot of events.

I have a silver bangle, a couple of gold ones, and gold and silver necklaces. They are all quite unusual and make the outfit.

What really makes the difference is the quality of my hair cut and colour these days, plus rediscovering a bit of makeup after 30 years.

How about a shoe boot? They work with dresses but also trousers. John Lewis do some nice ones and I love mine.

😂 Mine are reasonably comfortable. I can also sort of ruche them down to be knee length, but still struggle with what to wear them with.

Legs and feet 😆?

Askandyforcompo · 31/10/2026 11:34

Floaty dresses from White Company or Jigsaw. I've got a new blouse obsession and I've bought loads from Mint Velver, Hush and Jigsaw. All from Vinted, mostly new.

Sounds lovely.

What do you wear on your feet?

These sort of boots (attaching pic) - mine are a few years old so can't find the exact ones but these are similar - or DMs. Some outfits/places I would wear trainers - I never wear running trainers, only things like Adidas or Converse.

Iloveshihtzus · 31/10/2026 12:23

OP, I think what you are struggling with is shoes/boots for evenings out. There are lots of shoe boot ankle boots with a kitten heel out now - every price pint if shop has them, from Primark to M and S to designer. Go try them on and find a pair that you like. They will go with dresses and trousers for occasions when you don’t want to wear trainers.

This style will be ‘in’ for several years so you won’t have to find a new style for several years and because you only wear them for going out, they will last you until you want to change your style,

This is an example

If you like dresses and have some you love, wear them. As you can see from this thread, everyone wears what they prefer, trousers/jeans/minidresses/midi dresses.

Iloveshihtzus · 31/10/2026 12:25

For some reason the image didn’t post - just google sock ankle boots kitten heel and images from Next/M&S and H&M will come up as well as some more expensive options

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/10/2026 12:27

Another Londoner here so an aversion to heel wearing 😜. (I wore some high heeled Tracey Neuls boots for a dinner date about 6 years ago, does that count?)

When going for dinner somewhere nice, I tend to wear Pleats Please dresses (often balloon shaped). Last time I added Pleats Please widelegged trousers underneath as it was a bit chilly (and windy) for bare legs (I’m a wimp). Worn with trainers (usually Nobull/Walsh) or flat square toed Mary Janes.

The man has just booked us a weekend away in Milan pre-Christmas and we have some fancy dinners/events booked there (including a box at La Scala one evening) so I’m working out what to wear as I know Italy tends to be more dressy than Shoreditch (where I live)! A Pleats Please dress will definitely feature but I also seem to be transitioning into my (still obsessed from last winter) phase of velvet trousers in jewel colours worn with silk/suede shirts. I also have a beautiful green velvet military style blazer that I wear with jeans/trousers so that will make an appearance.

Footwear will be trainers for daytime but evenings will be boots like these (I have an older model with a different heel shape) with a dress:

And with trousers, velvet/silk Flabelus Mary Janes or soft leather Tod’s loafers.

We went to our local smart restaurant for a tasting menu last week. I wore this skirt with black suede flat sock boots and a cream cashmere short sleeve jumper.

Love, love, love this skirt! And wish i’d looked at this board earlier as it’s now sold out in my size!
