suggestions for what to wear for a family portrait please!

We have just won a family portrait at a studio - yay!

What sort of things do you think are good to wear for such an event? Hopefully we'll be looking at the photo on the wall for years to come, so I don't want to make any fashion mistakes!

It will be me, DH, DS1 (3 years) and DS2 (6 months).

My feeling is that too smart and the boys will look a bit 'trussed' up, and not like themselves.

Then I thought perhaps we should avoid patterns and all go for block colours? Don't know why.

Then I thought (possibly naff - please say if it is) that we could all wear different hues of the same colour (probably blue).

I am such a scruff and the boys just wear what is the next clean thing off the pile, so I would appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks!

Generally, yes, avoid patterns.

You could go for all hues of the same colour if you want -- that's very popular in America, for example.

One good general approach is to lay out the clothes you plan for everyone to wear on a bed and look at them. If any item jumps out at you then, you can guarantee that it will jump out at you in the final photograph. Try to keep everyone in the same approximate level of darkness/lightness -- you normally want to avoid having one person in a black top and another in a white top, for example.

It isn't Venture, is it?

I agree, go with plain colours - good idea about putting it all on the bed too.

Plain shirts for adults, plain Ts for DC, maybe all in nice jeans too?

my sister and i had one with our parents recently. we all wore autumnal colours! it looked nice for a 'grown up' traditional portrait. venture would be great with notjustmom's suggestion
