It's happened and I am in my elasticated trouser era. Loads of sweatpants available but am I too old?

I looked at John Lewis (of course I did) and they have lots of Superdry ones which look comfortable but would I be a laughing stock (late 50s)? It all looks very 90s Britney and early Jack Wills to me which was my university era. Luckily I don't care but I do need to understand the exact coding so I can style out my mutton mistakes if I make them.

I would ask my children but I was partying so hard in the 90s that I forgot to have them.

This would be for wearing at home mostly but I do venture out in daylight hours occasionally.

I also suggest "Do I have children?" (worried look) "Gosh I knew I'd forgotten something!" for necessary occasions.

I'm ok on elastic as part of tailored trousers and in jeans (now there's a thought). It's whether I, Barren Beryl (MDMA) née 1969, would look tragic in Superdry or similar athleisure or should I just find a nice plain powder blue pair from M&S.

The great thing about the current 90s-ish style is that you already know how to do it 🤗 In fact, this has now worked twice for me, since the 90s were a 70s-ish revival!

Wide trousers, platform shoes, waist-length jumper: sound familiar? The jumper no longer needs to be fitted (thank god), it looks more current with a roomy, even baggy top.

The ubiquity of elastane is a massive improvement on previous iterations, I must say. Also EVA, the lightweight bouncy stuff they now make hefty-looking shoe soles with.

Slip dresses, long flowing skirts, tank tops and multi-length layers are also back for the third time.

Go forward by going backward, as it were. Have fun!

... You don't have to share my commitment to keeping feet well above the ground, by the way. Also current: pointy toes, chisel toes, biker boots, cowboy boots, mary janes, ballet flats, trainers. All footwear may now be flat. The only shoe that must be avoided is the high-heeled court shoe. (They still have their place, of course.)

You can still wear a mini skirt with (or without) opaque tights and biker boots, that's never really gone away. Don't wear a tight, knee-length pencil skirt except in court shoe situations.

I don't think animal print's ever been as ubiquitous as it is now. I still have qualms about wearing more than one at a time, but it's acceptable and some women combine them to great effect. You can even double-denim if you want! And wear socks with any shoes you like!

I really love that fashion's pretty much a free-for-all at the moment. If I could offer one other piece of advice after 'go back to go forward', it would be 'if in doubt, choose loose over tight'. Most of the interesting developments have been to do with volume and fluidity - big, loose dresses; puffed or floaty sleeves; peplums; dropped waistlines; shifting layers; capes; oversized jackets and draped tops. Not all in the same outfit 😆

If I’m going to embrace cozy comfort, I’d go for smooth, knitted same colour lounge coords in a greige or buff colour.
I’d stay away from tight zipped tops and cuffed trousers.
Put a structured coat on to go out and you’re sorted.

Namemechangey · Today 08:28

Just so you know… the kids wouldn’t be seen dead in super dry…. According to my teen it’s for old people so not sure you would fit your brief.

ApexDragonfly · Today 09:21

My teens are currently obsessed with these.

Toms Trunks

My teens do that weird flipping down the waistband thing, that seems to be the fashion at the mo.

Trousers

Tom's Trunks Trousers are designed to be lived in. They are super comfortable, whether you are out and about or relaxing around the house.

I bought these last week. They tick all the boxes I was looking for. Super comfy, smarter than joggers so I wear them around the house but at a push could also wear them to work/ pub. They are also barrel leg (but not too extreme) so look current. Also come in lots of different colours. My friend bought 3 pairs she loved them so much. I bought the slate grey. There was a sign up discount too.

Those look pretty good! It says cotton & elastane, so are they cotton jersey? Sounds like their ethos is good too.

I think you'll find M&S has moved on (although powder blue was very in this year, along with pale yellow ...)

I must admit OP, I'm quite thrown by how you talk about yourself as if you're nearing the grave - but you're two years younger than I am!! And "barren" is such a horrid word ...

Maybe I'm delusional, but I don't think of myself as an ancient crow ... nor do I consider myself out of touch with fashion (though I pick & choose what I like, to complement & fit in with my own style).

That said, I'm not able to advise on joggers, as I didn't wear them in the 90s & don't intend to start! Any kind of sportswear just looks ridiculous on me, for some reason. I also hate clothes with logos - so even the relatively discreet branding on the Superdry bottoms is too much for me.

Also, I'm always warm so I dislike fleece or sweatshirt-type fabrics. My default pair of trousers for lounging around the house is an indigo twill drawstring-waisted pair from Toast (which I bought on Vinted so don't know the style). But you might like some of their current offerings. Mine aren't too dissimilar to these:

I came to suggest Toast OP. It is less of an athletic look, which you are certainly not too old for, but in case you don't want that. Toast have some really comfy elastic waisted items that will have a more sophisticated look. Not cheap, but really good quality and they do last.

Ophy83 · Today 12:28

Get the Superdry trousers that you like 👌

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · Today 12:37

I got these am currently between sizes but the drawstring pulls them in. Super comfy and can be smart or causal. Also too busy partying in the 90s and forgot to have children. www.fatface.com/style/su790141/w70115

I’m in Cornwall at the moment and I’m going to check out the Finnistere shop later because I’ve never seen it in the flesh. They have these although they look very casual.

https://finisterre.com/products/womens-recycled-sanderling-jogger-burnt-umber

Community clothing would be another good British option.

From a “ fashiony “ point of view I would look at Cos because they’ve always done an elastic waist which are a cool shape. I had a really great cropped wide legged trousers in a boiled wool that I got rid of because I’m an idiot.
For a budget option I’d look at Uniqlo… they do jersey trousers that bridge that gap between a jogger and a horse proper trouser

Don’t you have to pay a load of extra fees in import duty for that?

I hope people don’t post too much on here…. I am developing an alarming fondness for leisurewear… it’s a winter thing. And gym thing. I see people leaving the gym in these really nice…. Tracksuits.? I mean I can’t believe I just said that.

Edited

I buy it from a small shop in Devon... so the import costs are included on the price tag.

StylishAndBeautiful · Today 13:54

@Divebar2021 , Finisterre are quite outdoorsy/workwear but I've had good things from there.
I'd look at the website and make a note of what you want to look at and try on in the shop.

They tend to sell well on pre-loved sites, which is a good indication.

WestwardHo1 · Today 15:46

Ah you sound great! 😂 Wear them anyway. Try and embarrass those children that weren't born. I too neglected to procreate.

notacooldad · Today 15:49

These? Hmmm ... I'm afraid they look like waterproof over-trousers to me (I know, I have a pair for ridiculously wet/boggy site visits!!).,
Indeed! I wear something like that to help out my son at the farm!

Ancient crow here, so not that fashion conscious, but I make an effort. I live near a Cotswold Outdoor shop and have bought a couple of things that get nice comments.

www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/c/womens.html

Good quality too, not cheap. Maybe avoid the stuff aimed at people going to Patagonia to actually climb the Andes:

www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/p/ayacucho-womens-baleal-corduroy-trousers-B11CEH0731.html (Just love them. Hugely comfortable.)

www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/p/acai-womens-boyfriend-hoodie-B11BFA0344.html?colour=107 (Not this one but v. similar.)

I'm still dithering over whether to buy a cropped fleece/hoody/sweatshirt.

Isn't the word crone, not crow? Or are we actually comparing ourselves to intelligent, but rather sinister looking birds?

The OP used the word crow. Plus I'm a fan of corvids. What do they do that's sinister?

Well, I did have one offspring, and mine has put me onto Urban Outfitters joggers, but it’s the Out from Under Essential Barrel leg joggers. They are the softest cosiest warmest things ever.
Tom’s Trunks are amazing, but I would be cold in them, I have them for the summer, I absolutely love mine. They are very long!
