"Wear SPF every day! - is it a cult?

I see this all over MN and elsewhere - women declaring that its vital to wear a high factor SPF EVERY day.

Today its late October, high storm with ferocious wind and rain, why on earth would anyone put SPF on? Even if I was going outside, it would be for a tiny amount of time. The iphone tells me the UV index is 1. Please tell me what benefit wearing an SPF today would give anyone?

I wear SPF in summer on my face but only if/when I'm going outdoors. I'm not anti SPF - and the range of SPF available for the face is fabulous, but I am much more of an "apply as needed" type. I think about my day, the time of year etc.

Applying SPF in winter, on days with low UV ratings when you're likely to be indoors most of the day seems ridiculous. Unless I was to spend a sunny winter day outdoors hiking, I won't apply SPF until spring now and I think this is sensible.

What do people think they are achieving applying SPF through a British winter? Why the advice to wear high SPF layer on your face every day religiously?

I wear spf all year round - reducing from 50 to 30 this time of year unless it is very sunny, when I go back up to 50. I don’t care what others do though.

It really does make a difference. One photo is a 90 year old woman who wore suncream on her face but not her neck for 40+ years. The other is a trucker who had one side of their face exposed to the sun through the window of his cab.

It is true about electronic devices. I have a couple of sun spots that I have to have removed every year. They always come back so as a rule I have 3 laser sessions a year to keep them a bit under control. The clinic were I have this done have told me I must wear SPF every day even when indoors as screens also have an effect .

I have a very moisturising SPF cream that I put on every time I put makeup on so almost every day if I leave the house.
Even yesterday, I was out for 30 minutes walking to work so it's not true for me that I'm not outside in the winter.
I do it because it's easy and no hassle.

Yes I was going to mention the trucker one to the person who said UVA rays don’t penetrate glass - they do.

As an aside - surely everyone goes outside every day for a bit? Staying inside all day with no fresh air or natural light is really unhealthy.

Have a look at your hands. My right hand is slightly more aged and has a few more sunspots - that’s from driving and that hand being by the window I reckon.
