Has the way people apply foundation evolved over the years? Am I stuck in a rut?

Or are TikTok people a bit crazy?

When I was learning to do makeup as a teen we were told to buff our foundation. So put some on and brush round and round in circles…..well fingers back in the day. I still do this though now with a nice brush.

I keep seeing influencers just painting their foundation on like you would paint a wall. Bit brush stroke stripes of product until the entire face is covered. The other thing is there seems to be no concept of matching foundation to your actual face colour now. Seems to be pick a shade to make you look like you’ve got a nice golden tan and whack it on. There is no buffing.

My first thought was they must go through a lot of foundation! I mean they look good, do I need to be doing this? 😁

I recommend following Genevieve Turley on Instagram, she shows really simple makeup techniques that look fab. She even did a video not so long ago about 'are you a slapper' as in do you prefer to just slap it on with your fingers, no brushes. She's really funny too, and Jennifer Aniston follows her!

Can't seem to post a proper link but she's called genevieveturleymua

I love Gen. She is fantastic and hilarious. I want to be friends with her.

I'm intrigued. How do you do eyes first. I take five lots of eye drops three times a day. So first lot of drops in the morning, then foundation, blusher powder. Then second lot of drops. Then if I'm going out repair face, then apply eye make up. Even before the drops di the eyes after face.

Eyeshadow primer, concealer, loose powder (applied lightly on lids and generously under eyes in the area where eyebags would be if I had any), eyebrows, eyeshadow/eyeliner/mascara, brush away the debris with the excess powder or use a face wipe to lightly sweep away any that's landed on cheeks and stuck there.

Day to day I don't do heavy eye makeup looks though and never have any fallout to clear up from doing eyes even though I do use eyeshadow. I'm just careful with mascara not to daub it anywhere it shouldn't be too.

But that’s not true if you apply powder after your foundation, nothing will stick to the powder and you can just brush any stray eye make up flecks away.

Yes but matte foundation isn’t the preferred look nowadays. Glowy and shiny is preferred. So no or little powder.

HappyViewer · 23/10/2026 13:21

Always do your eyes first.

This has definitely changed. When I was taught how to apply make up at Clinique and Chanel we were always taught base first, then blusher, then eyes, then eyebrows and lips. I don’t think it matters really, we all have our own ways of doing things.

There is no day make up from a night out make up look anymore. Seems the fuller look is always worn daily.

I see the exact opposite… the clean girl barely there look

Yeah I get that. I still like to use some powder, but not so it looks obvious.

Same here. Just the T-zone and concealer get a quick powder. It works for me.

Cherrypie0210 · 23/10/2026 14:15

I use fingers and colour wise was always taught that the colour match should be to your face and mean you shouldn’t have to blend it past the underside of your jawline/chin.

I use foundation, a light dusting of bronzer (as i have tanned skin) a little blush (sometimes), eyeshadow, brow pencil (due to a scar through my eyebrow) and lipgloss most days. I have individual lashes done every 3 weeks, Very natural ones though that look like a good mascara, not the huge long monstrosities i seem to see everywhere 😅

I do want to try the new Charlotte Tilbury airbrush flawless blur loose powder to replace my bronzer though. It looks so good in all the videos i have seen online and you can do a softer or heavier application depending on how ‘airbrushed’ you want to look.

Anyone got any tips for choosing the right one, foundation in terms of colour?
I never seem to get it right. I've tried the make up counter, online fads etc.
Plus I'm a different colour in the depths of winter 😂
I think I need a colour match one. Any one tried them.. and what kind of brush?
Also what do people think of the Korean glow type products.. would they work on older skin?
I've just remembered that these things are often in Black Friday offers.

Its also in case you make a mistake ao you can easily remove it, or so you can get a crisp look, but I dont find eye shadow fall out just brushes off if I apply powder under the eye, and too much powder isnt really the "look" these days

I went to the Estee Lauder counter to find out my colour, this was in winter and she did say i would need a different shade for summer.

I have the old formula Estee Lauder double wear foundation and have not tried the new one yet! So may be on the hunt for a new foundation soon 🙄

I used to do it that way and then annoyingly kept getting sparkly eyeshadow on my face so I switched.

ToadRage · 23/10/2026 15:52

My best friend is a makeup artist and she reccomended the expert face brush then starting from your noose and working out apply in circular brush strokes and blend throughly.

They just look sweaty.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 23/10/2026 16:22

HI @Sunbringer re the glowy foundation... any particular brands in mind?
Powder finishing is starting to look aging on me.

There was a younger woman on a programme we were watching, and my DH said is she ok she looks sweaty. I said oh thats just her make up 😳

Mycatsfeetsmell · 23/10/2026 16:29

Ive moved completely away from foundation
It just looks too heavy now
The concept of applying one layer all over your face is dated, the influencers squirting it on their faces -ick
My go to is Erborian CC, I mix the 2 lightest colours and apply on the centre of my face blending out after using either Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched face base or Erborian BB drops( Love!)
Ive got thread veins and a patch of melasma CC concealer on those
As you get older make up cakes and creases so a dewy treatment tint is much nicer

I use a teeny bit of Benefit Pore Professional in the centre of my face to blur

I think I ve been lucky with foundation, I’m quite pale and always seem to be able to find a match. I use boots no 7 hydra luminous stuff which is cheap with medium coverage and a bit glowy. I tried expensive haus labs in Sephora the other week and it looked the same as the No 7 stuff. 🤷‍♀️

I do believe that some people have winter foundation and summer foundation to account for the change in colour.

i use a Morphe foundation brush which seems good.

i do like Korean type skincare. I use beauty by joseon spf, torridon dive in toner, illyoon ceramide skin barrier, byoma oil cleanser, elf vit c serum, corsyx snail mucin serum, sungboon green tomato serum, sulwahsoo clarifying mask. Also medik8 retinol and Tretonin. I probably am more up to speed with skincare than make up! 😁

Powder finishing is starting to look aging on me.

I find the boots no 7 hydraluminous good. If you have a Sephora near you then you can book for a makeover and if you buy products then it’s free. They were really good with me and I told them that I wanted the makeup to be suitable for my age.

she got me into One Size powder melt setting spray which helps avoid a powder finish look if you want to carry on using some powder. I do love Charlotte tilbury pressed airbrush powder stuff. But this setting spray just makes it look more glowy, but I think without the overly shiny/sweaty look.

I find it odd when they squirt make up/cream directly on their face and it starts dripping down.

I guess putting it on the back of my hand first must make me sound ancient.

It’s sensible, don’t worry ( I do that too, why wouldn’t you? Don’t work it will be a hack soon 🤣🤣)

Holisticthy · 23/10/2026 19:13

IzzyLeng · 23/10/2026 07:34

That was my concern. In real life maybe not so much. I use a good setting spray but I’d be worried it might slip down my face 😄

That's what I thought. Ive had make up for tv and it's the same as sm trends, so suspect it's a short lived trend that only looks good in videos. When they grow up they will cringe, like trends of the past, such as massive eye brows, very thin eye brows, excessive fake tans

AbraCaStabYa · Yesterday 15:18

After I turned 30 I started using cushion foundation and will never go back. It's thin like a serum, covers like liquid foundation and doesn't feel cakey at all.
