Keratin treatment ... wow!

I have naturally frizzy hair... neither straight nor curly, but poofy, and at the slightest hint of rain or damp I turn into Hagrid. I straighten it mostly.
I don't spend much on myself but decided to treat myself to Keratin treatment.

It works. It actually bloody works! Had it done last week, my hair felt great and smooth if a little flat (they did the treatment then straightened it for me)
Walked the dog in the damp... no frizz. Got rained on today... no frizz... and post washing didn't need the GHDs, just a blast with the hairdryer and it's soft and smooth.
Just in case anyone is considering it... I think it's actually worth it!

That’s a good price @NattyQuail . I pay £150 for above shoulder length, it takes a couple of hours with a brand called Fabriq.

I don’t suppose you’re anywhere in the North West?

Yes, I am actually. Blackpool

alwayslemons · 05/10/2026 18:05

Mine is definitely too curly for this but I think my mum might be interested... does it change the curl/wave pattern of your hair? Does it make it straighter? Or is it the same just minus the frizz? I've never seen before and afters that don't just look straightened so it's really hard to tell!

Forgetsheepcountducklings · 05/10/2026 18:05

They work but the treatments are very toxic, they release formaldehyde which is a carcinogen and can damage your respiratory system.

ItsABatFaceThing · 05/10/2026 18:10

@Forgetsheepcountducklings. Nanokeratin and 72 hair - and many other I assume - don’t contain formaldehyde

GameOfJones · 05/10/2026 18:15

They don't contain formaldehyde anymore....that was a key consideration for me when I started getting mine done.

I am in my 6th year of treatments and will never go back to the frizzy mess my hair used to be. I get it done every 6 months and it costs me about £120 a time. I flipping love having smooth hair that I can just blast with a hairdryer and don't need to straighten.

The only downsides are my regrowth at the roots is frizzy so I can start to look a bit odd if I leave it too long between appointments. And for two or three days after the treatment my hair is very, very flat but that wears off quickly and the rest of the time it is fantastic.

100% worth it for me.

Forgetsheepcountducklings · 05/10/2026 18:20

That's great if they really don't any more, but just raising awareness that a lot have marketed themselves as free of it previously and then it turned out when tested a lot did release it when heated. I was so upset when I learned as I had specifically chosen one which advertised itself as free of it. If you are looking at getting one, I would ask to see the ingredients ahead of time.

Isn't it basically just a perm, but straight?

JahanaraBegum · 05/10/2026 18:37

I have very frizzy, bushy, rough texture, porous hair. I had straightening followed by keratin and it is life changing. It is like I have a different person's hair and their hair is silky, non-frizzy and takes minimal management. Stands up to humidity even in a steam room.

It does not look particularly weird when your hair grows in at the roots, my hair still looks straighter and sleeker overall. You just have a root top up every 8 months to a year.

Lovely13 · 05/10/2026 19:03

Had it done several years ago. Was great, but did worry about damage, given the fume-filled salon during treatment. And the endless straighteners.

Essentially, yes in terms of it's a chemical solution put on your hair it's just they then straighten it rather than put it in rollers.

GreenLemonade · 05/10/2026 21:22

I had it done over 10 years ago and was quite disappointed. I guess I had wrong expectations: my hair is not frizzy but it’s slightly wavy and I wanted to get rid of the waves. Basically, I wanted bone straight hair and I didn't get it. I had it done at a bloody expensive salon, I wish they had explained what results I could have realistically expected.

StressyMcStressFace · 06/10/2026 08:03

Sorry if this is a stupid question but is this what's also known as a Brazilian blow out? My hairdresser was suggesting a BBO would be ideal for my hair as I have curly/wavy/fluffy hair and I've been seriously considering it. She said it would be about £150 so I haven't taken the plunge yet! If it's the same thing as what you're all recommending i may well go ahead!

Fiddlesticks1 · 06/10/2026 09:19

Been having this treatment for more years than I care to mention. Last year my hairdresser changed the product because of formaldehyde. First treatment I wasn’t sure but now I’m pleased with it. I have the treatment every eight weeks or so. I have very short grey hair and surprisingly my hair has always been very soft.

ParrotPeach · 06/10/2026 09:42

I’ve never found normal keratin treatments work for my hair. But I used to regularly have Yuko Japanese straightening done and that is a miracle.

My frizzy damaged wavy nightmare hair just air dried into perfectly smooth and straight loveliness (but more natural looking than when flat ironed)

Hels20 · 06/10/2026 11:29

Does everyone have to leave it on still for 72 hours? I like to exercise most days which puts me off.

OranginacanonlybedrunkinFrance · 07/10/2026 21:45

I used to go to a salon and it was close to £200 and I couldn’t wash it or even brush it for three days. It also didn’t survive ski holidays (sweaty head maybe?) or sea swimming (salt water no doubt) so I learned to have it done straight after a holiday.
I now have a mobile hairdresser who does it, it costs £80 and I can wash it immediately after. I spend less going to the hairdresser as I can get away with much longer hair as it’s not exploding all over the place. It also seems to last longer so I only get it done twice a year now

JudyTeeny · 07/10/2026 21:51

I love it, I have mine done every 3-4 months. It costs me £80 in a small salon but large salons in a nearby city charge anything up to £250. It's kinder to my hair than the old Brazilian blow dry.

tiredmummasita · 07/10/2026 22:11

I use Colour wow.. well I did and it was so good but think I’ve developed some kind of allergy to it as I get a massive red rash around my neck when I use it now. Might give this ago instead

TheRealSmurfette · 07/10/2026 22:30

Do you can’t ever curl it afterwards?
