Mother of the Groom in 8 weeks!

ihaveafavouritecat · 02/10/2026 11:29

Please help me! My son is getting married in 8 weeks and I haven’t a clue what to wear. So far I’ve ordered three dresses online (Coast, Lavish Alice and Florere) and have sent them all back. Earlier this week I had a personal stylist appointment at John Lewis, bought 3 items (Hobbs dress, Reiss dress and Phase Eight jumpsuit), but not sure any of them are right. Also ordered a jumpsuit from Me+Em, not yet received. I don’t know if that will be right either, I know it will need shortening about 6 inches!
I’m 5’3, 9st 6, have lost 7 stone over last 3 years. Blue eyes, brown hair/blond highlights. i think the colours that suit me best are greens/golds/sandy but not at all rigid except that pastel colours make me look washed out.
There’s a register office wedding service and then the bigger wedding ‘do’ 3 days later, so I need two outfits! Budget about £400ish for both. I just feel so much of what I’m seeing is so ‘bland’ and ordinary, I want to feel a bit more cool and funky but still smart of course.
Would really appreciate some help or suggestions of makers/brands I’m not aware of… thanks in advance.

Op you’re right and im wrong, I just tried it on again and this time showed husband and daughter as they are here now and they both think it’s fantastic, and I would wear it out to dinner, it needs taking uo an inch, but its a keep. So thank you!

I just had the jumpsuit delivered and it’s not for me sadly, so it’s a return job. Pics below.

it is absolutely beautiful and clearly silk, the size 6 fit perfectly, no pulling, but it’s very very much like an evening gown, and very shimmery, and I sadly simply wouldn’t wear it more than once.

it’s perfect for what you want, but I think op it’s actually going to be way way dressier than the dress, so I’d recommend this for the main wedding,

This looks stunning on you, the colour really suits your hair.

Hi @OneNewEagle No, her mother hasn’t bought her outfit yet, but is back in UK and looking at dresses now I gather . Future DDIL said she would let me know. I’m going to be away for much of next couple of weeks, so I needed to get my outfit sorted. I’ve shared photos with DDIL and told her my rough plan. I’d be open to wearing either green or teal dress if she or her Mum had a preference based on their own outfit, as I gather this is wedding etiquette. But equally I could swap jumpsuit to the big wedding day and wear one of the dresses to the reg office. I don’t know. I currently have three outfits and two events so surely I should be okay. And I still have that cherry red Hobbs dress from my John Lewis stylist appointment, which seems like ages ago now, but was in fact only 11 days ago!

I think, at eight weeks before the wedding, if MOB hasn't already sorted her outfit you are absolutely fine to go ahead with whatever you want. I think traditionally MOB chose the colour first but things move on. Eight weeks really isn't a long time. It's not like you're going to turn up in the same dress.

Yayyy there you go! 👏

I’ve done a complete 180. I’m now completely in love with it, not sure what threw me when I first tried it on,I think it was the length and width of trousers made me feel it was more gown like,

my daughter who is very honest and tells me straight said I like that a lot a lot, my husband said it was lovely and that it didn’t look cheap with a grin 😂

and yes it’s perfect for registry office, I’ve hemmed it up and it is better at the right length, so thanks again for finding it,

What do we think of these… ? (I’m almost afraid to ask) 😳

Ooh @Wildgoat did you hem it yourself? TBH I’d quite like to do it myself as I don’t feel happy handing it over somewhere for it to sit in a bag or a pile, and possibly get crushed while it waits to be dealt with, and they have it for three weeks. Would you mind showing me what you did?! I will have to shorten by about 4 inches though, so will have to cut it. Maybe I could make a pouch-y bag with the bit I cut off?! 🙃 (I can sew by the way, I’m not about to take scissors to this divine garment from a place of zero sewing skill!) 🙀

I actually like these better than some of the more kitten heely options, simply because I think the trouser fabric demands a more substantial shoe or it will swamp them.

For me personally with those voluminous trouser legs I'd go for a Chie Mihara or Esska kind of high block heel to hold their own, but then I don't find a heel hard to wear.

Thanks @Wildgoat I’ve just ordered these to try as they were indicating low stock.
I’m feeling a bit sicky-anxious now, think it’s all this spending!

If you can sew, you could buy a piece of velvet or satin and make a knot bag, maybe?

I love that idea ...

I’d agree, you need time to get organised as well.

SixteenMonthsLater · 10/10/2026 18:21

The gold Dune, Vinted shoes are not a favourite! Maybe a bit dated, though may also not really show under your jumpsuit?

OneNewEagle · 10/10/2026 18:24

Oh if you can sew op then use the extra materials for a little velvet bag, won’t cost anything that way and will match. You gather it all up likr you do for making velvet pumpkins.

I’d cut slightly then use that iron on webbing stuff.

OneNewEagle · 10/10/2026 18:25

@ihaveafavouritecat send everything back you aren’t using and then you won’t feel sick or anxious. I suffer with my nerves, to coin an old fashioned phrase.
