Mother of the Groom in 8 weeks!

ihaveafavouritecat · 02/10/2026 11:29

Please help me! My son is getting married in 8 weeks and I haven’t a clue what to wear. So far I’ve ordered three dresses online (Coast, Lavish Alice and Florere) and have sent them all back. Earlier this week I had a personal stylist appointment at John Lewis, bought 3 items (Hobbs dress, Reiss dress and Phase Eight jumpsuit), but not sure any of them are right. Also ordered a jumpsuit from Me+Em, not yet received. I don’t know if that will be right either, I know it will need shortening about 6 inches!
I’m 5’3, 9st 6, have lost 7 stone over last 3 years. Blue eyes, brown hair/blond highlights. i think the colours that suit me best are greens/golds/sandy but not at all rigid except that pastel colours make me look washed out.
There’s a register office wedding service and then the bigger wedding ‘do’ 3 days later, so I need two outfits! Budget about £400ish for both. I just feel so much of what I’m seeing is so ‘bland’ and ordinary, I want to feel a bit more cool and funky but still smart of course.
Would really appreciate some help or suggestions of makers/brands I’m not aware of… thanks in advance.

Next have some lovely gold shoes

EleanorMc67 · 08/10/2026 21:44

Much paler gold from Osprey, in two styles. I prefer the "puffy" style, like the ones above.

Hi op, I have pm’d. hope it’s ok, just looking for sizing advice, I’m in love with the jumpsuit, looks amazing in you

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/10/2026 22:22

Lovely hair. Can’t help on accessories as I’m a silver gal, not gold, but I’ve really enjoyed your thread and I’m so glad you’ve found things that you love.

Ruthietuthie · 08/10/2026 22:32

The hair GORGEOUS! The life, the movement, the suggestion of a person with grace, liveliness, and humor! LOVE.
For shoes, what about these: Ariel by Air and Grace.
For bag, I would go for something like this: Bottega bark bag. (Obviously, doesn't have to be the Bottega one, which would bankrupt us all, but do you see the loose shape that is actually, deceptively, structured. There is nothing stiff about the bag, but something very cool about it).
You will be BEAUTIFUL.

Loving the hair and the jumpsuit is beautiful!

PassengerDerby · 08/10/2026 22:36

Jumpsuit looks gorgeous! I'll be no help with accessories but will still be keen to see the finished look! Well done with the hair! Everything is coming together 🤗

Ruthietuthie · 08/10/2026 22:37

Or this Cult Gaia bag which is very organic and super cool:https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/cult-gaia-caldera-metallic-clutch-bag-0400019612455.html?dwvar_0400019612455_color=GOLD

Came on here just to see if there had been an update from you OP - LOVE IT. The jumpsuit looks fabulous, so flattering. loving the new hair do too. What a great idea going in the store today so we can see how it would look with alterations. This is going to look great with the gold accessories and heels. This has been a great thread and you’ve been a real trooper.

Serenitesanta · 08/10/2026 23:44

I’m so glad the quest goes on with the accessories!! I’ve so enjoyed this thread, am quite invested!!!
You look stunning in both outfits - the dress just stunning and the jumpsuit so striking. And fab haircut.
I’d reiterate don’t skip the proper ‘foundation garments’ for both looks, bra in particular makes such a difference.
i hope you’ve butterflies knowing you’ve those two outfits in your wardrobe, you’ll look so beautiful on the big day - was there a destination wardrobe needed too? 😉

Personally, I prefer a closed toe or maybe a peep toe in winter - I don't like anything super-strappy.

Thanks @EleanorMc67. Yes I’m thinking I’d prefer a closed toe shoe, rather than strappy sandal, don’t mind closed toe + sling back. The wedding is North West UK in early December, highly likely to be raining! I’d also prefer a block/more solid heel - unless you all tell me these choices are miles from being on point. I’d prefer to feel stable and secure. Broke my ankle a few years ago so a bit wary of heels and wonky pavements. Gold or bronze-y metallic shoe would work for both jumpsuit and green dress… but maybe not teal dress - still to decide on which.
Three more dresses arrived today 🤦🏼‍♀️Haven’t even opened those yet, but I think I’ve made my choice - or at least narrowed down to three for the two events. The latter three arrived too late - you snooze you lose!

Gold heels - Eska Charlie would be perfect with that gorgeous jumpsuit.

I think an oversized gold clutch bag would be lovely. Whistles?

M and S Autograph have some chunky gold jewellery.

Thanks @Askandyforcompo. I like the look of those Esska shoes , particularly the heel and platform, but maybe prefer a closed toe.

Thank you @Serenitesanta Yup I hear you, and PPs about getting a decent bra. That’s on my to-do list for sure. PP mentioned a specialist shop not far from Bath which I will get to, but not for a couple of weeks. No, it’s not exactly a destination wedding- just rainy North West UK in December! Thanks though for getting involved and all your positive comments ☺️

For footwear that has lots of stylish options but is also comfortable, I always recommend Anonymous Copenhagen. It's on the pricey side though, which you might feel isn't worth it for occasional wear. Have a look though, as it might at least give you ideas re the shape of footwear. And the height! They also do a lovely clutch bag in two sizes in gold leather, but it's currently sold out.

These are nice, in terms of ideas for shape… I have pushed the budget on clothes though, so will need to claw back on bag/shoes/jewellery. The chunky chain they gave me to accessorise jumpsuit in Me+Em this pm was £650! 🙀 Err, thanks but no thanks. starting to think about shoes…

I hardly wear any jewellery and not gold. But these larger bags might match with both outfits there are other designs. https://onehundredstars.co.uk/collections/bags-1/products/amulet-emerald-kiss-lock-clutch-bag

Thanks @OneNewEagle I like the quirkiness of these . I quite fancy a sort of pouch-y bag, with not much frame or structure, maybe in gold velvet - but again you guys might say noooo ?!

Penelope Chilvers has this bag in bronze (which is more of a rich gold IMO).

https://penelopechilvers.com/products/mystic-leather-bag-bronze?variant=57930296656203

Thanks @EleanorMc67. Yup I quite like this, like that it’s a kind of squashy shape - but it’s a bit bright and shinier than I have in mind I think… and a bit ££s …

Thanks @Ruthietuthie for lovely feedback on my hair. My hairdresser nailed the brief today, I was really happy with it.

The shoes aren’t calling to me - but the bag is utterly gorgeous! Beautiful, but impossibly ££/$$s Who spends that on a bag?! 😳

OP posts:
Ruthietuthie · 09/10/2026 00:39

Did you see the Bottega one, @ihaveafavouritecat ? Not that is SERIOUSLY gorgeous. And seriously over (any sensible person's) budget! But that squishy shape, which is very Bottega, is what I would look for.
I think, providing they weren't too bright gold (you want something more muted, anyway), the shoes could go for both occasions. Of course you need to be comfortable and secure on your feet, but a slim, kitten heel would be more current than a chonky block heel (unless it was JUST the right thing, but easy to get a bad one that makes your ankles look blocky). And yes to a closed toe, given the date. A pointed closed toe.

ihaveafavouritecat · 09/10/2026 00:41

EleanorMc67 · 08/10/2026 21:44

Thanks @EleanorMc67 yup I like the puffy squishy one too… bigger than I think i need though.
