Invited to very fancy party and nothing to wear!

A very fancy and couturey fashiony party; guests will be wearing CHANEL but my speed (and budget) is a lot more like Boden. What would you do? I wonder if there is something chic I should target on Vinted or Vestaire (or somewhere else?)? Rixo maybe?

And absolutely I could just wear something in my wardrobe but it would be great to hear any inspiration!

OP - have a look at The Queens of Archive website. I only posted the ones on Liberty previously. Lots more on their own website.

I'm sorry to say this, but I really don't like that Self Portrait dress, @custardlover. I think it looks sort of style-less and dowdy, the fabric looks like really shiny polyester, and I'm not sure who that length would flatter.

I'll try to come back with something more constructive than that tomorrow!

I agree. I think it’s the wrap style as well. She can definitely do better.

OP, lots of vampire’s wife style dresses floating around at the moment as well as the actual Falconetti original. Mint Velvet have a silver one and Oh Pioneers! do liberty style fabrics. Wyse used to do a very good dupe which you might be able to pick up on eBay or Vinted.

I have a black lace vampire’s wife dress that I’ve never worn. It’s beautiful but they are very synthetic!

If you like the Toteme slouch waist recommended above, there’s one on ebay. https://ebay.io/m/AvA0Zu. Not my listing, I was just curious!

I really like this. I still like the sequin self-portrait one and I don’t think we always have to dress exactly like our surroundings as long as it’s fitting for the occasion (which it would be) so I don’t see the problem if OP really liked it.

But this is lovely, anyway. It’s British and chic and perfect for the time of year imo.

This is the first pink floral one, I think it's The Villanelle. Do check the measurements though, as you might be a 12 in them - almost all the listings say they run small. This one mentions a slight stretch in the fabric, so if you love it I would definitely haggle!!

And this one!

I made an offer and bought this! I love it and now just hoping that I fit into it...

That's lovely @custardlover . Where did you buy it from? Update us once you've tried it on please.

Most of her stuff is silk or cotton, & even silk-lined. Though there are some (high-quality, they feel nice to the touch & are weighty) synthetic crepes etc. But the H&M collab is (understandably for the price), mostly synthetic. Lots & lots of the black lace short dresses, cape dress etc on eBay & Vinted.

Exactly - I like both too. And in fact, why should we dress exactly like those surrounding us?

I never quite understand the threads on MN where, if someone asks for advice on a high-end event in New York or Milan etc, posters rush to recommend American or Italian designer dresses. Surely that's the last thing you want to do? Recognisable - maybe even duplicated by another guest!

As you say, all we need to be is appropriately dressed for an occasion, & the rest is open to the individual. Why try to "fit in" or compete with Parisian women wearing new season Chanel?!!!

Oh well done! I hope you got a bargain! It's really lovely & (IMO!) fits every bit of your brief!

Now, what about your shoes, bag, coat & jewellery ...?!! 😁

Gorgeous dress, OP! Also some other really beautiful dresses on here for me to lust over. Have a wonderful time.

Edited

Lusting over gorgeous dresses (that I can't afford/wouldn't fit into) is a favourite pastime of mine (in case you couldn't tell from the number of photos/links I sent ... !!!)

There are even a couple of links from a PP that I might be able to wear ... the black COS one is lovely.

I own a dress by the vampire’s wife and it’s very nice but it is synthetic, as were most of the Falconetti dresses when VW was still operational. I’m not talking about the H&M collaboration.
