Do you manage to fit exersise into your day with a 10 month old? If so any tips?

I am 10 months post 1st baby. Am actually bigger than when pg. God I feel fed up about my appearance and don't socialise anymore (partly because of weight/general frumpy appearance and also obviously because I have a busy baby)
Realised I am never going to stop looking pg until I do some exersise, but am struggling. I walk pushing the buggy most days (don't have a car) and work 2 x 12 hour shifts as a nurse every week (very physically tiring).
I am still bf so don't fancy jogging (which I used to enjoy) as boobs sore if try to move too fast ( they are 4 x normal size at mo). Anyone recommend good sports bra? I look like a cow - doesn't help that I am only 5' 2". All the clothes I am in have to be suitable for bf and are pretty shapeless.
I used to be a size 10 but had to make effort (am not naturally small) and am now size 16. My stomach is wider than the rest of me. Please help.

Did anyone else get fatter when bf? I was hoping it would help to shift pounds..... seems to have had no impact. My appetite is enormous.

I would put dd1 in the pram half an hour before her sleep in the morning and then walk for 15 mins in one direction as fast as I could and then walk home again.

Then I would do the same in the early afternoon.

This equated to 1 hour of fast walking every day. Walking is one of the best excerses for weight loss as it is a high fat burner.

It is also free and walking babies in their pram is lovely you can talk to baby and they get fresh air and usually drop of to sleep.

Make an extra effort to go for a long fast walk with baby in buggy at least three times a week.

Are you eating healthily? Could you cut out biscuits etc? I love to preach to people about losing weight when I'm sitting here probably half a stone too big and desperate for a chocolate chip cookie.

But seriously, power walking pushing the buggy is great for arms too.

agre with ivykaty. I have put on weight while feeding but probably due to the copious amounts of chocolate and cake I was eating

Walking is great for babies. Think about it as your way of getting to places - shops, swimming pool etc. Just walk everywhere!

I have been (very nearly) exactly where you are now! 5'1" snug size 16 (had been an 8) and while breastfeeding 3rd baby could not stop eating. Like you, used to run but couldn't manage it with enormous breastfeedign boobs.
There is hope tho - I am now back to a size 8 and fitter than I was pre babies! I did it using Davina McCalls dvd's, because I realised that the only way I was goint to fit the exercise in was to do it at home. You have to be really motivated and fit it in whenever you can. Obviously with a baby that often means at completely ridiculous times of the day but I found that was the only thing that worked for me. I can't say it would be my exercise of choice (I would still prefer to run) but it has worked wonders for me and the exercises are really good.
Hope that's helped - good luck!

I had a really strict rule that if I could walk in uder 45mins then we walked, whatever the weather. If the walk is up hill even better. I also used to save up "errands" so if I had 2 letters to post, I would go out twice to post them.

I noticed recently that my local council run exercise classes for mums in the park, which involve the babies and buggies, so would be worth looking into too.

I put on loads of weight during breastfeeding, ended up weighing far more than I had done after the birth! I did eat far too much crap as I was too tired to eat properly. Hoping to avoid doing that this time.

How long are you planning to breastfeed for? I didn't really lose weight until I stopped. I too walked everywhere but that made me even hungrier!

taliac · 30/06/2008 11:17

Walking miles with pram. Those buggy fit classes. Join a gym with a creche. Mother & baby yoga.

All things I considered doing to get fit but as yet have not.

Apart from pushing the pram, I've done that!

When I had just DS1, I used to get on the exercise bike during his morning nap. Also long walks with him in his buggy.

Now I have DTs as well, I don't really get any formal exercise, and don't even walk with buggy as much as too blardy hard going out with all three any distance.

You don't want to be jumping about too much it's still quite soon. I strapped my dd in a papouse and did a lot of hill walking. I used to do about 2 hours a day.

Notyummy · 30/06/2008 11:47

Walking....like everyone else has said. Running as well. Pilates (I have a DVD I do regularly) will help to tone, although doesn't really burn fat. The one I have has 2 30 minute workouts and a ten minute for when really pushed for time. I find I can do the 10 minute one done with dd around (she finds it hilarious!) I can usually do half of the 30 minute one, pause it and put her in highchair and place dinner in front of her, then do the other 15 minutes!

Exercise dvds are a good and cheaoer alternative to gym, and can be done in nap times. Plus, Matt Roberts book 'Fit for your Shape' has good workouts.

My friends reckons Tesco diet site is good as well.

Good luck!

At 10 months, baby might be old enough to go in a bike seat (I started both mine at that age, but safety advice varies, as far as I can see).

So you could get a good cv workout without hurting the boobs that way?

jelliebelly · 30/06/2008 12:46

Definitely walking (fast) while pushing a buggy - I used to put ds in the buggy at naptime and walk for an hour every day - you need to walk fast enough to increase your heartbeat though and feel slightly out of breath by the end of it - may need to build up to this is you're not used to it. I also bought an exercise DVD and did that when ds was asleep - with all the curtains closed so the neighbours couldn't see!!

docket · 30/06/2008 12:48

Agree with those who suggest long walks.

I used to do the Davina McCall DVD as well - 3 different workouts and you do each one once a week. Quite easy to fit in and I noticed the effects!
