How would you style this dress for a wedding?

LadyCrazyCatLady · 15/09/2026 19:40

15yo DD has purchased this dress to wear to a wedding and she loves the fit of the dress, and it's the only one that we've tried that she likes, so it will be the one that she's wearing, but we need help with shoes/cardigan/jacket? etc.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks

I like the dresses but think these styling options all sound way to casual for a wedding!

Denim jacket and brown boots is giving substitute teacher vibes not formal occasion.

Id lean into the 90s look of the dress and do a heeled strappy sandal in a colour matching the dress- green or chocolate suede. Small clutch bag. Potentially a cropped bolero style cardigan in brown

I’d stick with urban outfitters or other shops she likes and get a jacket - maybe this? https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb/shop/uo-brody-faux-suede-asymmetric-jacket?color=220&type=REGULAR&viewcode=a2

I love the dress and this jacket would be perfect, would also look good with the wide jeans they’re all wearing

What about a wrap style thing for shoulders like stevie nicks. Chunky heel.

It's a registry office & a meal & a disco in a village hall, though, in autumn - it sounds quite informal to me. Plus, she's 15, so mightn't be great with heels/want to wear them afterwards. But we don't really know ... so it's guesswork really!!

I agree about a denim jacket, but if the boots are smart & worn with a jacket that tones with the dress, I don't think it needs to be sandals. My (limited) experience of village halls would suggest that it might be quite chilly in October ...!!!

I love the dress and the brody jacket that’s been linked. Those kind of sock ankle boots would look cool and a bit more dressy for a wedding or if they’re a bit too grown up then there seem to be lots of Mary Jane type shoes around that would also match 😊

Fushia pink jacket/blazer and shoes.
its a nice dress but a bright or bold colour that is completely different to what is on the dress with look good

Really like the jacket and it would look nice with this dress for a meal out. For a wedding I would think either the jacket or dress should be a big dressier to go with other but maybe based on age it’s fine or with dressier shoes and bag

Sorry, but that is horrible imvho.

However, it doesn’t look like the OP is coming back so we’re all shouting into the void.

no teenager is dressing from marks either

RiverRed · 19/09/2026 20:51

This jacket is on sale at Uniqlo and would pick up the brown in the dress. She’d hopefully get a lot of use out of it after the wedding. Agree with others that boots similar to what the model has on would look good. https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E484512-000/00?colorDisplayCode=38&sizeDisplayCode=004

Good call

The teenagers young adults I know would maybe get the accessories from their own preferred shops (eg Weekday, Stradivarius, Bershka etc) or like the 23 year old DD of my neighbour she’d do vintage. There’s a vintage shop in my local town Bromley called Downtown Retro which has loads of great quality items plus accessories to wear. If she must go to Boohoo, PLT and something then let her but personally I’d prefer something I could wear again, jackets look a good shout. Don’t forget though October can be cold especially in a village hall so you may want to think of a cardigan underneath the jacket and also a light scarf. Unsure if they’d work with the dress but I’ve seen lots of Spanish mantilla type scarves and silk knotted scarves if she wants to try that too. Very pretty dress too.

DuggansBakery · 20/09/2026 02:57

I’d send the 15yo off to create a Pinterest board of what she’d actually like to wear. My own girls would pair this with Docs or converse, and a bomber jacket from somewhere like Hollister.

A fuchsia blazer would get 👀👀👀💀 in our house.

And then these shoes: https://www.asos.com/prd/209634949?acquisitionsource=pasteboard

bearing in mind I’m styling for a teenager not myself! Ahem Joe Browns posters 😉

Edit to add: also like the boots in the model photo!

Edited

These are definitely not what the teens wear. My daughter and her friends all wore crocs with debs dresses

ccccccccc · 20/09/2026 12:45

I agree that biker jacket would be ideal

Different locations, I’ve def seen 18 year old fashionable kids wear these (work in a uni)

No teens here would be wearing crocs with a dress to go out out

it’s ASICS or the like for day and strappy wee heels for night

AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer · 20/09/2026 16:28

This isn’t an appropriate dress for a wedding

ApolloandDaphne · 20/09/2026 17:41

That's a gorgeous dress.

Exactly. And that's why phrases like "what the teens wear" - see also: what the Irish wear to weddings, what 60-year old women wear, what women in Milan wear in summer, what coats students wear (& other recent MN posts that elicited ridiculously sweeping statements, which homogenise millions of people into one!) - are rather pointless!!!

Our opinions of such things are based on our own experience - sometimes that's limited, sometimes it's much broader. I tend to pay more attention to the latter.

chat GPT suggestion, although didn't quite pick up the right dress:

EdithBond · 21/09/2026 08:56

I’d go with something like this. A fake fur or velvet jacket. Otherwise, she’ll be freezing.

Combined with suede or suede-effect chunky-heeled shoes (and maybe opaque tights), rather than boots.

Depending on the colour scheme of the wedding or venue, I’d also add a bright scarf, hat, handbag or corsage. The dress is camo tones so IMHO needs a bright colour to jolly it up for a wedding.

Vibrant pops of colour are on-trend for autumn/winter.
