Is 8 too young for beauty/styling?

Need ideas for nearly 8 year old girls birthday present. She loved it a couple of weeks ago when I curled her hair with my straighteners. Is 8 too young for a proper curling?

I wouldn’t buy her one, it’s a nice thing to do for her. As time goes on ye wont have many of those moments.

Do you mean taking her to the hairdresser to get her hair curled on her birthday? Because that would be fine if it’s what she wants. I wouldn’t gift an 8YO a curling iron though because she’s far too young to be allowed near it on her own, she’ll just burn herself, so then it’s not really a present for her.

Fine to curl it but I wouldn't get her own, unnecessary and a massive hazard!

I’d maybe get her to try the heartless curl silky thing, my grandaughter uses them at night and her hair looks fab in the mornings, you could perhaps get her a lovely brush and bag to keep it in too, like a little pamper kit.

It’s too young for anything to do with ‘beauty’ IMO. I think it’s damaging to steer little girls into this very toxic aspect of capitalism. Focusing children on their appearance isn’t very healthy. It can provoke insecurity which then traps people into relentlessly buying products and treatments in order to look acceptable. Even at nearly 50 years old I still know a lot of women who tell me they ‘can’t leave the house without make-up on’. It’s so depressing.

Appreciate that might be seen as quite an extreme viewpoint but it’s how I feel. Excessive focus on grooming is damaging in so many ways.

I think at that age it's nice to keep curlers/straighteners for odd special occasions. Think about the damage heat tools do to adults hair (not judging I use them myself) and children's hair is much more fragile.

Buy her a microscope.

Has she got a doll styling head to play with? The equivalent of my 1970s Girls World. Or a Barbie beauty salon. Please don’t buy her curling tongs or straighteners.

Heartless curlers are all the rage like PP suggested. Also silk pillow, silk scrunchie and silk bonnet for bed are very popular. Will make her feel like she’s doing beauty when actually she’s just taking care of her hair

Too dangerous at that age. Also you can enjoy doing it for her.

We shouldn’t be encouraging our girls to focus on their appearance at that age, it would be better to spend the time ensuring she can read well.

Too young. I don’t think I’d even buy something like this for a 12/13 year old. An 8 year old shouldn’t be worrying about her appearance.
