Please style me for an autumn wedding!

I'm thinking of buying this dress for a wedding in October. It's a small relaxed event, registry office followed by lunch in a nice pub with around 20 people. I'm a close relative of the bride so expect to be in the photos - the bride will be wearing bright pink! I'm pretty clueless when it comes to style and beauty matters so I'd really appreciate your ideas on shoes, jacket and bag to complement the dress. I can only manage fairly flat shoes, say 5cm high.

@ColdHenrietta a velvet trouser suit does feel more exciting, to me, than the dresses I've been considering. Maybe I've been trying to shop too early to find much like this?

I know I'm trying to force a square peg into a round hole with this outfit. But I am quite into the idea of the cropped fur jacket now, I could see me finding a use for something like that again too.

You spotted it! Loved his skits on The Young Ones 😁

I sung it out loud, too. 😉

Me too. My son now loves the Young Ones (they’re all on iPlayer), so all of his skits are fresh in my head.

Like: i’m not really foreign, you know. I just do it to sound more sophisticated!

@RevolutionaryBiscuitsOfItaly I’d ditch the jacket if it’s black. Velvet isn’t really in the shops yet. There are single breasted velvet jackets about - maybe try House of Bruar. They have some.

I have that dress and will be perfect for the autumn wedding you describe.

Be aware that the hem is quite a bit lower at the back than the front - you may like that style, or you may prefer to alter it to even it up.

I wore it with these shoe boots in burgundy suede - I have wide feet so choice is limited.

I tried several jackets and couldn’t find one to suit the shape or colour of the dress, so I ended up buying a cardigan from Mango which was exactly the same burgundy colour as the background colour of the dress. I’m fairly sure it was this one, which is currently in the sale:

I’m quite a quiet, understated kind of person and was happy to tone the dress down, but you could easily jazz it up by picking out the pink tones instead.

Hope that helps - and enjoy the wedding!

@InMyFireHorseEra Thanks so much, you've really encouraged me that the dress could be great! i've ordered it, tried it and sent it back once already, having got cold feet. The fabric felt lovely, and I think the colour suited me so I'm just waiting for it to arrive again. I didn't spot the hemline variation last time, so I'll look out for that.

I love the shoe boots and cardigan you chose - I'm thinking shoe boots or close fitting knee high boots could be right for me. I think I'd like a little gentle contrast with the dress, so I might try to pick up some of the gold/ochre colour in it, or alternatively the pink. I'm going just from photos at the moment, so it'll be easier if I can take the dress into shops with me.

OP, if you're havering about a dress then you might be interested in this recent thread. Some of the velvet trouser suits on it are very expensive - but they might help you decide on the look you want to aim for? And as other PPs have said, they're likely to be coming into the shops now or very soon.
