Has anyone else noticed the rising cost of higher-end make-up?

Cost of higher end make up- going up and up.

I used to buy lots of higher end brands but didn't feel they were a rip off (I'm excluding most of Dior and Chanel here and other very £££ brands.)

But now so much make up is pricy.

I buy Bobbi Brown foundation - was £25 for ages now over £40 gradually crept up.
Nars blusher- £20-ish now £35
Lancome mascara - now £25+

I've swapped the foundation for Loreal for everyday use.
Pencils like lip liner and eye pencil- Elf and Loreal.
Mascara - Loreal Panorama
Blusher- still stuck as I am super pale so still Nars and Laura Mercier.

Has anyone else noticed this?
I now think twice before buying and in any case I just buy when it's run out.

Yes I’ve swapped to less expensive brands, same for a lot of my skincare! With make up in particular I begrudge paying so much for it when I so rarely wear it now. When I buy expensive make up I actually look for minis/travel versions where I can. While I know it does work out more expensive compared to buying the full size versions, it would take me ages to use the full size and would probably end up going bad before I could finish it.

Noticed this about 2yrs ago. Swapped Estee Lauder foundation & powder for No 7. Havent looked back.

Crushed23 · 15/08/2026 21:10

I buy it when I need my make-up done for an event. (I go to Bergdorfs where the service is ‘free’ with a purchase of 3 products.) I can justify the cost that way.

IslaLewis · 15/08/2026 22:16

The prices seem to rise quite fast.

One minute foundation is £40, a few months later £43 etc.

I only buy when there is 20% off but even so....

Make up is expensive but the more expensive stuff lasts longer on my face in my experience and doesn’t run out as quickly either as like the eyeshadows are much better colours you don’t need as much as the pigments are better.
i tend to get some new bits at Christmas/birthday and pad it out with some cheaper things inbetween

Yes, I noticed this yesterday as had to order more Nars foundation. I went back through my past order emails to look for the shade I use . Bought it for £35 in 2021. Now it’s £45, although I got it on offer 20% off at Boots luckily.

IDontHateRainbows · Yesterday 07:22

I think how they sell makeup has changed now with all the beauty boxes/ edits/ advent calendars. I'd never buy a mascara on its own for example. Loads of people shopping this way now so the individual products, if they get you hooked on something, are more expensive

GCAcademic · Yesterday 07:26

Some of it has also shrunk in size. The Nars “multiple” blusher is now 8g instead of 14g previously.

ViciousCurrentBun · Yesterday 07:38

I have to buy Clinique as I’m allergic to all other make up I have tried. It’s always been on the expensive side. I ask for it as birthday presents. I’m not in to anything ornamental and I do not like books as gifts as I may have read it so asking for make up is good. Didn’t need any thing this birthday so asked for plants. I obviously only request if asked.

Yes. Used to love Estee lauder futurist foundation, was much nicer than double wear
But their prices began to rise very sharply. It's like brands think people will pay those prices so why not?

I voted with my feet and always buy high street foundations now. Loreal foundations are brilliant.

I feel Mac is one brand that has stayed quite consistent in terms of prices in the last few years. I buy their lipliners and find that hasn't increased in the last 3 or 4 years.

IDontHateRainbows · Yesterday 12:53

It's not hard to find things on offer or wait for discounts/ deals so only those who arent bothered about paying full price or left it last minute and run out are paying these prices.
I use a givenchy powder which is £52 full price never paid that as I get it in advance usually 25% off.

Of course i then think it's a bargain at £40 thats the more real price and how they get you.

UpToonGirl · Yesterday 13:01

I've noticed this but I don't think it's just high end. I bought the L'Oréal balm foundation last week and it was £18.99, I feel like not that long ago L'Oréal sort of level was £10ish for a foundation. Annoyingly it's also a tad light for me.

IslaLewis · Yesterday 13:52

I have a mental limit of around £30/35 for a single product, before discounts, but will push the boat out for something I love- mainly colour or texture, with foundation.
And yes, I only buy when on offer.

I stopped buying lancome mascara @£25 and it only lasted 3 months. I prefer Loreal and online I can get it for under £10. It lasts longer.

For me it's often about shades. There is not one single shade of Boots No 7 lipsticks that work for me. And similarly their foundations- too pink, too dark, too yellow.

The price of everything seems to be going up all the time and high end makeup is certainly no exception. I watched a YouTube video the other day where they were recommending a foundation as being 'mid priced', as in not luxury, not budget either. It was £39!!! That definitely sounds like a luxury price to me 😲

WiltonGal · Yesterday 15:10

All make up has increased across every pay point. I used to impulse buy make up in places like Boots and Superdrug with varying degrees of success, but now make up is very much a planned and considered purchase, with research done beforehand to get the best deal. I only buy higher end stuff online now as well to get the best deals. It has forced me to rein in my spending, no bad thing.

curious79 · Yesterday 15:13

Personally I think Chanel / Dior don’t look so expensive anymore. They’re comparable to many of the brands you mention and lovely to use

I did that, Clinique to No 7 Foundation and blusher. I came out in a rash. Ditto No 7 lippy irritates my lips. No 7 powder is fine.

TheyGrewUp · Yesterday 15:20

@IslaLewis L'Oreal own Lancome I think. I might try L'Oreal mascara on your recommendation. Usually use Hypnose.

I like it- lasts ages and doesn't flake over the day.

There are only a few companies out there and Loreal own so many brands (14) including Lancome.

Who owns the company however doesn't mean the products are the same.

It's ridiculous. Some Chanel lipsticks are now £50. How can any lipstick be worth that?! I've also noticed a decline in quality in a lot of supposed high end brands.

I still use Clinique, but that was never in the same league as Chanel, Dior, YSL et al anyway.

I've noticed this, it's a way of normalising ridiculous prices I believe. And those youtubers then consider foundations that retail for around £60 as high end. Such as Haus labs, or Victoria Beckham foundation which is £104!!

There are cheaper blushers for pale skin

Marroon · Yesterday 19:05

It’s probably gone up proportionately the same as everything else. I would say generally products, not just makeup or high end, seem to be about 40% more expensive than 8-10 years ago.
