What to wear to a funeral in this heat

I have to go to a funeral next week and don't know what to wear. My usual funeral wear is a smart black long sleeved wool dress and knee high black leather boots, plus a black wool coat, but none of this will work this time.

It will be quite a smart event, but there will be some walking across grass to the churchyard so my shoes in particular need thought.

Has anyone got any ideas about what they'd wear to such an event? I'm really stuck not just for dress but also shoes and tights?

I'm 50, 5'6", and size 12/14. I just want to get it right. Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

I wore smart and comfortable dark navy culottes (below the knee ones) with a short sleeved blouse and a lightweight navy jacket to my mother's funeral in July. With smart black Birkenstock sandals.

I didn't wear tights. It's far too hot for those.

I'd suggest that wide legged trousers and a short sleeved blouse could work for you.

Even if you do choose a dress, go for comfort. You can wear a pair of nice sandals with it without tights.

I wore a black summer dress I already own that's midi length but nearly to my ankles as I'm short, it's got a modest neckline and no sleeves and my doc marten black leather sandals.

Most other women were wearing similar black summer dresses with smart summer sandals or heels. Some were cotton shirt dresses. People had arms showing and it didn't matter.

Everyone looked appropriate but comfortable.

I work in the funeral industry and many people don't wear black any more. Most ladies wear a pretty summer dress, some heels, some flats, lots wear smart trousers. Many men still wear a suit, but lots prefer open neck shirts & trousers. I think so long as you look smart, you don't even need a sombre colour.
I had one funeral where everyone wore Hawaiian shirts! But that is definitely the exception!

I’ve actually got a summer funeral dress. It’s a white company black 50s style Broderie a glass dress which seems to fit the bill on a day like this

I bought a black broderie anglaise shirtdress for summer funerals - I would be able to wear it for work too

White shirt tucked into black work trousers, black umbrella and black sunglasses.

I went to a funeral in a heatwave a few years ago and wore a black maxi skirt and sandals with a navy top.

I went to a funeral during the last heatwave and wore black wide legged trousers with tan sandals (the trouser legs were so wide you could hardly see my feet and this helped keep me cool). On top I wore a smart, dark green t-shirt because I don't own anything short sleeved and black. With jewellery and a black handbag I looked smarter than many people there.
