Going short with wavy hair

Should I facilitate my DD’S desire to cut her hair short (bob length)? She’s 8 years old and has been asking to cut her hair short for a while. I have short hair myself and there are a couple of girls in her year with bobs who look great. But they all have super straight hair… whereas my DD’s hair is wavy and very prone to frizz, and I’m a bit worried how it will respond if cut short. It would be too short for a ponytail at her desired length, so always down.

In my shoes would you go ahead and let her cut it? And does anyone have any tips for managing and styling short wavy hair? The mains issues are frizz and tangles. Eg how would we fix bedhead in the morning without brushing and turning it into a frizz ball?

I have straight hair myself and have never gotten the hang of wavy/curly hair, but really want to support my DD if I can.

I’ve got wavy/frizzy hair. It’s a right pain whatever the length. When it’s long I wear it up 99% of the time. When it’s short I make liberal use of hats/hair clips etc. Bobs are a good place to start if you want to try out a short style because at least they are relatively easy to grow out. Just make sure you buy her a range of clips/hair bands so she can clip back the fuzz and she’ll be fine.

This sounds like a dream. Can you describe the style, please?

Mine got curlier as I got older, too! V weird. At 21 I could look perfectly presentable without a hairdryer, but by 29 it was frizz city.

But what's wrong with long princess hair?

The right length for my hair is halfway down my ear and cut into lots of layers. I'm not recommending that for everyone though, just saying that's the right length for me. As other posters are saying, not all curly hair is the same.

I spent at least 40 years wanting a chin length wavy bob and every so often I'd try and grow it into one. It never worked but that didn't stop me trying. The last time was during lockdown which was when I found out the hard way what happened when I couldn't change my mind, run back to my hairdresser and ask him to cut it. But it clearly works for some people.

I have thick curly hair - ringlets if I encourage it.

I have had it long most of my life but cut it shorter three times.

The first time it was cut to a length between my chin and shoulders in a straight line with no layers. It looked awful - like a triangle of frizz stuck on my head. Highly not recommended!

Second time it was a steep inverted bob, just about long enough to tie back. It was quick to make it in to ringlets by twisting sections around my finger whilst it was damp. I quite liked it. The curls were easier to manage and it was much lighter.

Third time was a very layered style like Marilyn Monroe. Too short to tie back. The curls look beautiful just by scrunching my hair with a towel and letting it airdry - occasionally I add some curl defining product. I absolutely loved it.

I definitely need layers for my hair, even though it's short.

Nothing wrong with it but it’s great to see girls experimenting beyond the current fashion of long hair which seems to worn by the vast majority of girls atm.

I think you'd need to ask the hairdresser as not all curly/wavy hair is the same at all.
I have a long bob with wavy hair it's been my easiest hair style so far. I put some frizz ease serum on it when damp then let it air dry. argan oil on the ends when dry. I can do curlier styles using the silk heatless curls or just a fabric hair band. It's made my hair so much healthier.

I have wavy hair/curly hair and have had various bob lengths for decades now and it’s my best length. Everyone’s curl/wave pattern is different so it’s hard to say how her hair will respond. Mine can’t be too long for example, or the curl gets pulled out of it.

It’s only hair, just let her cut it and find out. It will grow back!

That’s what I was thinking, use products on the hair afterwards.

I have a wavy bob, I keep it this length as otherwise there’s just too much of it to deal with. It can go in either a short ponytail or half up, depending how recently it’s been cut.

If you can find a curly salon for advice on styling, it’ll make life easier. But use a light product to tame frizz and only brush when wet, use fingers or a wide tooth comb to detangle.

If it turns out to be a mistake it’ll always grow back!

Yes - shes 8, she shouldn’t be worried about frizzy hair ! If you’re that bothered about frizz, use a detangler spray when damp and air dry for a nice wave. If she doesn’t like it she can tie it up soon enough when it grows out a bit.

I have thick wavy hair. I put loads of conditioner on and comb it through leave for a few minutes before rinsing. Argan oil or serum is really good. It only goes frizzy if I leave it to dry naturally. It’s okay if a use a hair dryer and straighten it. Layers do help thin it out a bit. She’s 8 so she should have more say in how her hair is cut.

I'm not sure that it is an actual style. I suppose it's a sort of pixie cut.

Use a silk hair wrap overnight. Really works miracles for frizz and knots
