My first ever pair of Birks are hurting me. Persevere?

I bought these as everyone raves about Birkenstocks but the are rubbing the inside side of my foot near the base of my big toes. I have the beginnings of blisters after a gentle one hour stroll this evening. Also I feel the end of my toes bump off the ridge at the front. Do you just get used to that?

Please share your Birk success stories. I really want to like them.

If your toes are bumping off the ridge at the front, are you sure that they are big enough?
I've just purchased my first pair also (Arizona though, not Mayari) and they were comfortable from the off.

relaxitsok · Yesterday 22:16

I definitely find my toe post ones need a bit more acclimatising to when I get them out each year. But I’m not sure about your toe hitting the end, possible you need to go up a size?

Petrine · Yesterday 22:16

They can feel a bit hard at first but you shouldn’t have your toes bumping off the ridge at the front. It may be that you’ve selected a size which is too small.

I am pretty sure they are the right size. I tried on the size up and my feet were swimming in them.

I also have the Arizona and have been wearing them for years. New pairs take a little while to wear in. They also rub a little when they make their first appearance for the summer. Once that’s done though they’re the most comfortable shoes. Definitely persevere, go for shorter walks in them and use plasters when you can.

AlphaApple · Yesterday 22:19

Also. My heels are comfortably in the shoe at the back.

The toe bumping thing is minor compared to the blistering. I am hypersensitive about the ends of my toes (seams of tights enrage me) so I don’t think it’s the size that’s the problem.

Thank you @StellaShining. I bought them for a holiday in late August so I will try to wear them in before then.

Got mayari and they are super comfy. At first they were a bit stiffer, but not greatly so .

They’re the Doc Martins of sandals 😂 just need a bit of love before they’re comfortable!

Shinyandnew1 · Yesterday 22:29

I’ve never had blisters with Birkenstocks-sometimes they can feel a bit weird the first time I wear the sandals in the summer, but not to the point of making me sore.

SisterMaryLuke · Today 10:21

I bought my first pair last year and I thought they were never going to feel comfortable. However, someone on here recommended wearing them with socks around the house to break them and this worked a treat with the bump under the toes. I appreciate socks maybe trickier with a toe post.

Are they narrow and you need regular fit? If the foot image inside is coloured in / solid colour they are narrow. If it is a foot outline they are regular. Lots of shops only sell narrow so I buy direct from Birkenstock where they sell the whole range.

sugarapplelane · Today 10:51

Persevere. I have the same style and they are so comfortable. Just need a couple if weeks to break them in. I am thinking of getting another pair

Thr33lions · Today 10:54

I’ve officially just retired my Arizona Birkenstocks after 3 summers of perseverance. The top strap just cuts my foot to bits. I’ve concluded they are just not for everyone.

outerspacepotato · Today 11:01

Birkenstock didn't work for me, the footbed rubbed one side of my right foot. They're just not sized for everyone. And same as OP, the bigger size was way too big.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Today 11:03

I bought a pair just before a ‘hot and humid’ holiday. They were horribly sweaty to wear!
I’ve still got them, but TBH have never found them super comfortable even in cooler weather.
Having been unlucky before, I now never buy any shoes that don’t feel immediately comfortable. Too many have had to end up in charity shops.

To be fair, I don’t have the ‘easiest’ feet in the world, though.

ElderlyDilemmas · Today 11:08

They do need a bit of breaking in for me. I'm wearing Mayaris today and my toes don't touch the ridge bit when my heels are just inside it. But I have another, newer pair exactly the same size where the toe loop part feels too tight, I think it does depend to some extent on the exact shape of your foot. Perhaps leave them off for a few days then build up from shorter walks. I usually start new ones by wearing them to work (I drive so am just pottering around an office).

AlphaApple · Today 15:36

I have different sized feet which doesn’t help!

I wore them again today, with less walking, and they were better. I think little and often for the next few weeks will cure them.

They are supportive and I’m not getting the ankle/shin pain I get with other sandals and flip flops so that’s a positive.
