Is this suitable for an event with a cocktail dress code ?

Yes, it was the only reply on the whole thread that rubbed me the wrong way (maybe a record for mumsnet 😂)

Cocktail dresses should show less flesh, be structured rather than strappy beach-like wear, and they should be classy and more businesslike. If this is a work function, I would say you would look out of place.
I thought everyone had a simple classic black dress in their wardrobe for just such an event! Maybe something worth investing in.

I had it shortened a little so it's less of a gown and more of a dress. It's a little less glam, but still looks pretty nice - for those who thought it was nice, anyway, those who didn't still won't like it. I'm satisfied that it fits the dress code and it's very easy to wear - super comfortable - but I don't feel at all like I'm headed to the beach!

I was responding to the comments up thread where some people have said that everyone should have a black dress for such an occasion.

Maybe a bit late but seeing as it’s been black tie before, I’d go with that!
