Is this ok for a wedding? My heart is saying yes but head is saying no.

I’m going to a wedding in August, the wedding is at a country hotel not a church and my DH is a friend of the groom.

is it too much white? If it’s ok what accessories would you wear?
money is a bit tight atm which is why I’m looking at Vinted.

this “rule” being supposed to apply to brightly coloured prints with white backgrounds is bonkers. People getting married are meant to be adults aren’t they - anyone who gets bent out of shape by this dress needs to grow up!😂
Its a pretty dress, accessorise with either a deep pink if you can find the right shade, or else an olive green like the leaves.

This dress is sold as an actual wedding dress. Imagine if you were stood next to the bride in the photographs. This is the problem with wearing a white dress as a guest now.

That’s a very different style, with a lot of plain white in the skirt. Really not comparable with the OP’s.

It isn't always the bride who gets bent out of shape tbh - sometimes it is the other guests.

So it depends how confident you are. For me, there are enough guests at a wedding that there is a possibility that at least some of them will think I'm a cock for wearing a dress with a white background. Should they think that? Of course not. Is it a bit laughable 😂? Yes it is.

But it is enough to put me off all the same.

Fair play to people who don't care, but I would pick not feeling awkward over having the white(ish) dress.

Exactly. So what if the bride or guest "needs to grow up" as someone said. I have been at a wedding where the bride's sister was quite happy to be vile to the groom's relatives as she knew she'd likely never see them again. If I can avoid someone making a snarky remark I would rather do so!

Completely fine like all the others on here that have asked the same questions.

But you'll get loads of people telling you it's utterly unacceptable and loads saying it's fine so it's pointless asking.

Exactly this. The MN view on guests' dresses at weddings is generally batshit.

mashandgravy · 04/07/2026 20:35

Why do people always ask this same question? You don't wear white to a wedding. It's not rocket science or in any way hard. Just choose another colour.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 04/07/2026 20:49

It’s a lovely dress, and you’ll look lovely, too.

No one is going to mistake you for the bride, nor will you upstage her.

Enjoy yourself.

sallyluyah · 04/07/2026 16:28

it's lovely and I'm sure no one is going to mix you up with the bride.

This!

They ask it because they remain quite rightly flabbergasted at the rumour they have heard that people now have turned colourblind en masse and think white background with a large floral pattern is the same as just white.

They then get that rumour confirmed by some people and have other people agreeing that it is in fact nonsense.

Tryagain26 · 04/07/2026 20:58

No. It's a flowered dress and the prominent colour is red!
Only on Mumsnet would anyone say it's tok white

A wedding dress no. A floral dress with a white background perfectly acceptable. It's only recently and mainly just here on Mumsnet that people say it's not acceptable

It always used to be that the one rule about colour was ‘green should never be seen’ - it used to be deemed unlucky for guests to wear it. Thank heavens for small mercies that seems to have been forgotten by the dress colour police.😂

Wasn't the phrase in fact 'blue and green should never be seen?'

OtterLovesItsRock · 05/07/2026 02:16

It is gorgeous. Wear it! Accessorize with plenty of pinky red, or maybe pale lilac; or spring green, or even lime green or very pale feathery yellow.

It does not look remotely bridal.

I strongly dislike this! It looks like viscera.

Overtheatlantic · 05/07/2026 03:02

I don’t like it for a wedding; it’s just too slinky somehow.

I've always found this question annoying, thinking the dresses that women post look nothing like a wedding dress, until now. Thank you, lesson learned!
