Advice needed- help me learn how to make skirts look stylish and flattering

I wear loads of separates but mostly wide leg jeans and trousers. I have one elasticated waist, patterned Fat Face skirt and, while it’s nice and comfy, it’s not exactly high style.

I’m 5’4 and size 12 with a big old mum tum.

Would love to get into skirts this summer. How can I wear longer skirts this to look classic, stylish and flattering? Which fabrics work best? Pleated, buttons, bias cut? Linen, cotton, satin? Which types of tops work best?

Here are a couple I fancy trying but am a bit clueless and don’t want to end up ordering loads of duffs.

Of all those, I like the Poetry skirt. Then the WNU. Absolutely not the Boden one.

I'm enjoying a Banjaara circle skirt in this heat. It's so comfortable and perfect with a vest top or light shirt. I'm taller than you (and it's long on me) - but you could call and get them to shorten one

So I looked at the advice offered here (very helpful, thanks) and bit the bullet. Have just bought this skirt. I’m not mad about white and black together, so will pair with a navy/ white striped vest or blue silk vest top. Wish me luck. We’ll see how it goes… www.hush-uk.com/maddie-pleated-cotton-voile-midi-skirt-white/014443-0001.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_brand_allusers&utm_content=brand&src=paidjourney&tw_source=google&tw_adid=787659526041&tw_campaign=23344296717&tw_kwdid=pla-295707486900&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23344296717&gbraid=0AAAAADmDz952H7x_jB8OZlBojMoZPw6U7&gclid=CjwKCAjwpK3SBhASEiwAtV1SPFxu9FTEeMZ8uLjyVkgiHMI9K_SXGxwpJaVwOHCjtFQhLNhShJe-CxoCZUYQAvD_BwE

That’s a nice skirt OP, but I think it might need ironing once it’s washed and I don’t iron (I have a steamer but it’s not especially effective and doesn’t have the same effect as an iron).
I think pairing it with navy will work too.
I love a long skirt but tend to go for jersey material ones which come out of the wash nice and flat 😂

It’s … ok. White is a neutral - you should never have to think about what colours it will go with, it goes with everything.

I don’t see anything about a lining? So it will need a slip to hang and move well.

There’s a reasonable amount of fabric - but I’d still have been happier to wait for a sale price. And then look forward to wearing it with Shetland wool and tweeds and knee high boots in autumn.

I am a pronounced apple shape and skirts can be tricky. This Summer I’ve found the Hush Maddie cotton voile skirt in white to be extremely flattering. Very soft high quality material and the micro pleats at the waist are excellent. I wear this with Uniqlo baby tees : fitted and land at the perfect point on the waist of the skirt without adding bulk by tucking in.

I should have read the full thread before posting! I see you have bought the Maddie skirt. Thoroughly recommend

I had to return original Maddie I bought in L and size down for a M. Looks 100 pc more flattering. It comes up very large. Have attached some pics from Whering of how I wear it

@RingofBrodgar thank you so much. That is really helpful! I have ordered a medium but I’m a size 10 to 12 and so I suspect I might need to size down because Hush tends to come up quite large. I was looking for baby teas online this morning and so it was really helpful to know they work with the skirt and Uniqlo do them. That first little montage you made is exactly my style and colours and so it is really helpful!

@RingofBrodgar you’ve also inspired me to download a digital wardrobe app. My daughter has one and uses it all the time.
