Dodgy style and beauty ads online and how to spot them

Not sure if this is posted in the correct category but I see loads of dodgy sales ads, especially on FB for products that look great, but result in disappointment for people who buy them.

Recently I have seen what look like lovely dungarees for about £36, when you can buy identical for a fraction of the price on Amazon (they come from China).

Another: a beautiful supposedly hand made bag, accompanied by a website which features a photo of two ladies making mags in the “about’ section. Both the image in the ad and on the website were generated with AI according to to a free online AI image checker (plenty of these free AI image checkers if you want to google them).

Another scam: states that ladies in a certain age group can receive free wool to use from a certain retailer, just fill in your details on a form (that happens to be a scam data harvesting link in disguise).

Just thought I would highlight recent sightings here to warn people.

Look very carefully at website terms and conditions, check Companies House, return info, check images etc, and don’t believe fake reviews.

Feel free to add any dodgy ads and possibly scams you might have seen lately.

I came on to say I read the title of your thread as “doggy style” 😳 My DH is forever buying stuff off FB that never arrives or is absolute tat and nothing like the advert so you are right to be cautious. On the other hand, there are some gems like Forgotten Tribes that advertise there and are completely legit. I use Trustpilot if I’m unsure.

Any company with London in the title needs to be looked at in detail before ordering!

And don't take a recommendation from another Mumsnetter as necessarily meaning that a website is legit.
