Surprised to feel bored with long hair after growing it in for years!

I have had my hair in all manner of lengths over the years but generally just below shoulder for the most part. I became really excited to grow it out a few years ago and it is finally quite long. I suit it just as much as the shorter styles, I think, but it really is an anti climax!

I still have my own colour - mid blonde - at 52,, so am happy enough with that, but i have definitely begun to wear it up all of the time, and not just during the warm months. Once lifted up it seems to brighten my face, but it did this when i was younger, too. I think, perhaps, the longer loose style overwhelms my face and that's what's going on.

Has this happened to anyone else? I aske because I used to enjoy the threads on here about women growing out their hair through covid, ditching the shorter cuts and ejoying letting it flow free Grin
I know a lot of people were giving backlash to the dated idea that women over 40 should keep it short, which in itself.....feels dated too, now!

I am not sure I want to cut it yet,, but it may explain why i prefer it pulled up.

Are you pulling it up in to the same style all the time? I tend to swap between a Dutch crown, a bun and a mermaid pleat. They all give a different look. For a while I wasn’t having it down much but then got in to Alice bands and bandanas/scarves with it down and am loving that too and get a fair few compliments.

TheMillionthBeautyAddict · 28/06/2026 02:32

Yes this has been my experience too! After many years of trying to get used to wearing it down or finding a long style that doesn’t blow/fall across my face every thirty seconds, I now tend to keep it slightly below the shoulders again, so I can tie it up without it weighing my scalp down, since I’m apparently going to just tie it up anyway. 😅

Thanks! Not just me then!
I think that I had presumed i'd be so happy because it took a long time to grow and I hadn't had it long for so many years. And it does look decent, in soft slight waves, but I do think it overwhelms my face a bit and the strands just get everywhere (it's fine but plentiful) such a smy mouth, eyes, all the damn time.

My face has definitely started to change now, i can see less tautness around my jawline, and to be honest I am not sure the long downward angle of the hair suits me as much. I know there is nothing 'wrong' with my face and there are no rules but, er, there we are.

I can't see the appeal of long hair. Shorter hair just looks so much more chic and edgy and you can do more with it. Its more flattering for faces unless you have a face shape like Jerry Hall.

Once my hair gets caught on my handbag strap that's when I hit the hairdressers.

I often think I’d like to grow my hair but it gets to around shoulder length and I realise that I hate it. It’s very fine so looks straggly easily, I don’t like the feeling of wet hair when washing it and as soon as it’s slightly humid or damp out then random bits stick out. Fortunately very short hair suits me so I run the clippers over it every few weeks. Until I get a hankering to grow it again….

HedgeRowsCircle · 28/06/2026 11:15

it's good to hear there's some variety, it seemed everyone here was going wild for the super long especially through the pandemic years. Perhaps it was the novelty.

There has been something so lovely about hair sweeping over my shoulders and down my back but for the most part i wear it up or back or in a claw clip. I have not seen many signs that shorter styles are 'coming back' but I might give one a go at some point!

I’m 60 and have NEVER had long hair. It’s quite thin and straggly and the longest I’ve ever managed to grow it, is top of my shoulders. ☹️

I’ve had variations of a bob and pixie cuts and a rainbow of colours for over 50 yrs now. 😂

If you do get it cut short, please consider donating the cut hair to the Little Princess Trust https://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/
They make the hair into wigs for young cancer patients. If you’re cutting at least 30cm off your hair it’s a really good cause. I donate every couple of years then grow it out again.

The Little Princess Trust

We provide free real-hair wigs to children and young people facing hair loss from cancer or other conditions, and fund vital research into childhood cancer.

My hair is waist length and I’m 52 so I’ve started to make more volume on the crown, lifts the old coupon

Housebashing · 28/06/2026 11:47

It just looked so scruffy on me I was expecting to look like Merida and looked more like Beetlejuice

Does it not bother you that you’d potentially look like Michelle Dugger?

CockyJogger · 28/06/2026 11:52

Ha no, I’m talking about higher pony tails, headscarf etc. it’s the answer, or else your face gets dragged down no end

alternatively layer the front

StrongGirlsLift · 28/06/2026 11:53

I go through the same cycle, but a few years ago I found a really wonderful organic hair salon. They have guided me to a style and cut which suits my face, with more face framing and layers than I’ve ever had. I no longer look or feel weighed down by it and am growing it longer than I have in years. It costs an arm and a leg, but I go 3 or maybe 4 times a year, and I’ve had so many compliments.

I have never stayed with the same hairdresser before, but I have been at the same place for five years now.

So, before you go for the chop, maybe ask if there are tips for a cut that would not be so draining? Or just chop it off and enjoy the different style 😬

Yeah. Women should have their hair how they want, I don't think "rules" are right and people don't have to care about what is flattering but I think it is generally true that longer hair starts to be less flattering on older women

Was just looking at global trends (i love maps, lol).
Noticed that France often stands out as favouring shorter, more textured/natural volume, compared to the straight down length trends of the US and UK. Obviously East Asia and China/India have cultural traditions of very long hair although some of that is changing in cosmopolitan areas.

It's a really interesting subject!
I did notice far less Hollywood length hair in France. A young woman at least might be more likely to sport a shoulder length wavy cut that capitalises on natural texture. I like this idea but not sure i am ready yet to take the plunge.

I’m 57, mine is down to my waist when straight , I never wear it straight, I wear it curled via heatless curlers so that brings it up, a good few inches,

I Often wear a thin little topper for some additional height at the crown, its one additional layer, and it’s indetectable, and a few clip in extensions to add more volume at the sides and layers,

I really love it when all done, it looks thick, healthy, shiny and bouncy, “rich girl” hair if you must, I’m brunette, and have some caramel highlights, and suits my style, which is softly feminine, I’m also quite tall and slim, so having lots of bouncy hair works, I seldom to never wear it up, I often clip the sides up though away from my face.

ive had it every length, but I’d say this is now my signature look, I think at some point I will go shorter, but max bust level. No shorter.

I think if your hair is always up, unless you like that, then change it, go a bit shorter.

How does the topper work? Is it expensive or a hassle to maintain?
