Glyndebourne today - rethinking what to wear, what would be appropriate

Has anyone been to Glyndebourne before & knows the dress code?

I am due to go to Glyndebourne today, never been before. I was due to wear a silk dress and jacket which are quite heavy/lined. But it is going to be baking hot today & I need to get part of the way by public transport - so I am rethinking what to wear altogether because I think I am just going to swelter in this outfit.

I have a long (lower mid calf) floral print fine cotton dress which I think will be a lot more comfortable & still smart. But tbh I am a bit intimidated by all the images of long formal frocks at this event and am worried it will be completely inappropriate to turn up like this.

Would appreciate any advice - many thanks.

Not everyone wears State Occasion Evening Wear by any means. Plenty of people go in simple cotton frocks.

And I should think today you won’t be the only person re-thinking your outfit. (Although I’m wondering if your silk dress wouldn’t be fine without the jacket?)

I think you'll feel very underdressed in a cotton dress. I wore a knee-length simple cocktail dress last time I went and felt borderline underdressed.

You’ll be fine in whatever you wear. I went last week and it was a big mix of very formal outfits down to the sort of dresses I’d wear for a lunch out.
The dress code has really relaxed in the last few years, and I imagine everyone will be wearing outfits appropriate for the hot weather.
Please don’t worry at all, enjoy the day and dress in something you feel comfortable in.

Nice frock will be fine. Also, there are changing rooms available though they are small and basically one room for men and one for women. I don't think there are showers but if you want to travel in something really comfortabe you would be able to change once you get there.

I was there last year on a hot July day. People wore everything from black tie to simple summer dresses that would be suitable for any occasion. Don't sweat it, you're there for the opera not the fashion show.

There'll be plenty of people rethinking their outfit and going with a lighter option right now. Go for comfort!

And solidarity - I have an evening function in London and although my dress is a linen/cotton mix it still feels like I'm going to swelter! I'm far too perimenopausal for this heatwave shit! 😂

I went last year. It was super super hot and there were many people in loose light cotton dresses.

Thank you all. I went with the cotton dress and felt fine.....glad I didn't go with what I had originally planned because I would have sweltered. I didn't feel out of place....it may have been because of the heat but other people seemed to have taken a relaxed approach, just a few sticking to long dresses/black tie but probably most not.

I had a wonderful time & yes focused on enjoying the music (Monteverdi!)
