So as the title says really
I’ve been at work today in my office in the hospital and it’s been absolutely sweltering.

i try to buy clothing that is 100% cotton for these hot days (no viscose or polyester) and I’m wondering mumsnetters - is this an generation thing??? I have always done this even when I was younger.

So my colleagues in their 40’s plus seem to do this and have cool breathable fabric outfits, but the younger staff today - some of them had one what they’d wear in the winter (think trousers or skirts and tights and long tops!) and even some of their summery outfits they were moaning they were boiled because they’re almost all made of man made fibres!

surely this isn’t rocket science??

I make a lot of my own clothes and there are very good viscose fabrics available - I find it a good option for hot weather.

I also sometimes want a bit more drape than cotton although cotton lawn is my most used fabric overall. Edited to say tencel is good for this.

People have a very puritanical/ unbending approach to fabric sometimes!

Absolutely - Tencel is better than viscose generally as it’s better on the environment and less toxic

Was surprised that 4 t-shirts I picked up in Primark (at £3 each) were 100% cotton.

There's a lot more to it than natural or man-made. Sports wear is man-made and you stay dry and fresh because it allows evaporation of sweat really quickly, whereas cotton soaks it up. You are really limiting your choices if you will only wear cotton.

It's just knowledge I guess. They probably don't know polyester will boil them and so much stuff is polyester now but also cheap

the John Lewis website is good for this as you can filter on material. I always select cotton, organic cotton, linen or linen blend when looking for tops etc

I bought some linen blend trousers recently as 100% linen has got so expensive and they're just too hot.

I have a friend who buys linen or cotton curtains from the local charity shop and makes them into really stylish clothes 🙂
