Has anyone found something that genuinely improved thin hair?

Sorry I’m sure this has been asked a thousand times
but has anyone found anything that actually works?

OP posts:
Lamelie · 22/06/2026 11:38

Plantur. It comes in colour boost/ grey blend shades too. Highly recommended.

Summerhillsquare · 22/06/2026 11:45

ReGaine. Takes a while but clinically proven. Go straight to the extra strength.

PaddlerRock · 22/06/2026 11:48

Can I just ask if you've gone down the route of blood testing, just to make sure there is nothing underlying?

It’s always been like this . I clearly take after my dad

PRP helped mine.

Biotin

minipie · 22/06/2026 11:55

It depends why it’s thin

Nutrition Geeks biotin & zinc & selenium supplement, plus iron supplements, has done wonders for my thin hair which used to fall out really easily. I know I have always had low iron, borderline anaemia.

I also have hypothyroidism which is another potential cause (though don’t think so in my case as medicated)

I agree some blood tests would be a good idea. ok you’re like your dad but deficiencies can also be inherited!

Cherry321 · 22/06/2026 11:56

I’ve found cutting mine into a choppy bob has made a massive improvement.

HeidiLite · 22/06/2026 11:57

minoxidil 5%

ApparentlyIsMyCircusAndMyMonkeys · 22/06/2026 11:58

I had some success with PRP and minoxidil but this was for hair regrowth. My hair is naturally very fine so although I can see a difference in the amount of hair I now have, it is still all very flat and fine and the amount of new hair growth hasn’t made a huge difference to the overall look, but has filled in some more noticeable gaps. I’ve ended up using hair toppers as they feel far less faff than lots of daily ointments and give the appearance of much thicker hair overall.

FriedaClaxton · 22/06/2026 12:00

For the people who have seen an improvement in their hair, was your hair always thin? Like the OP, I inherited my Mum’s thin hair and I’m not sure anything can be done sadly.

Gastropod · 22/06/2026 12:01

I can sympathise. Here are some things I tried:

ReGaine, twice a day for about 2 years: helped a tiny bit but not enough to justify the effort/expense
Biotin supplements for a year: Made no difference
Kerastase densifique shampoo/condioner/serum for about a year: Made no difference
Nioxin shampoo/conditioner/serum for 9 months: Made no difference
Bovine collagen powder for 9 months: Made a small difference, definitely some baby hair growth but not massively noticeable

Other things that helped a bit: protecting hair really well from excessive heat, stopping agressive hair colour treatments, and head massage!

Back in the day you could buy Wella Liquid Hair (non professional version).

It was a miracle.

I miss it.

Apparently you can still get it if you hunt around but my energy/patience is even thinner than my hair these days.

girlmeetsboy · 22/06/2026 12:09

PRP helped mine no end!

BeKookyExpert · 22/06/2026 12:47

The only shampoo I found that gave me some volume is John Frieda Volume Lift

Thundertoast · 22/06/2026 12:54

I think its totally individual, I had basic blood tests done for another issue and nothing jumped out, but then 'normal' levels are impacted by your biology and genetics so I wonder if I look normal on paper but my body could do with a bit more of X.
The best success i've had was a combo of scalp massage with one of those little tools, eating healthier (and lots of fish) and Glowwa. Cant really narrow down which did the trick but when I was consistently doing all three things did seem to improve, it takes months to see results though! In the meantime I do a hair mask once a week and use a boosting volume mousse on wet hair, as well as leave in conditioner and hair oil on the ends.

lovehatesummer · 22/06/2026 21:03

Bit random but vitamin d supplements. I was heading towards being vitamin d deficient, so was told to take 2000iu a day.

As a bonus, this thinning area of my scalp had lots of new growth plus daily shedding reduced dramatically!

PRP helped mine.

What's PRP?

Ibi · 22/06/2026 21:15

I’ve taken all the supplements, biotin, collagen, folic acid, vit d, all the special shampoos, changed my diet, literally everything! I’ve always had thin hair and as I’ve got older it’s got drier and more brittle. After having a baby, it was awful (hence all the supplements), nothing worked. Have been taking minoxidil tablets and have seen an improvement. The only thing is you have to take them forever. It’s not glossy, it’s still thin, but it’s not as wispy anymore.

Do they have to be prescribed?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 22/06/2026 21:25

Biotin does nothing 3 dermatologist confirmed this to me.

  • Iron supplements
  • Red led hair mask
  • Minoxidil- but you are stuck for life as soon as you stop (im talking 48hrs) it will begin to shed. Topical is much better than oral in tes of health. My dermtonight's strongly recommended i go down topical not tablet if I wa.ted to try it)

Topical things that helps superficially - wow hair have white bottle called carb something
Geniunely impressed with it.
Gives volume and the illusion of more hair

SkippitySkoppity · 22/06/2026 21:26

Minoxidil is very toxic to animals, esp. to cats, something to look into if you're thinking of going down that route.

Nellynoo182 · 22/06/2026 21:35

UK Hair has worked brilliantly for me so far! I’ve been using it since January and has made a huge difference in terms of growth. I still have fine hair but I have more of it now. I wasn’t keen to take minoxidil because if you stop taking it I have heard hair will fall out and it terrified me!

Helianthus23 · 22/06/2026 21:41

It’s wow dream hair carb cocktail I think

I use it and it’s deffo makes hair look thicker - even though it still falls out.

Saw a trichiologist and wasted a grand, PRP did nothing for me, oils and lotions and potions did very little and now it’s all blamed on menopause

Im currently trying a tik tok rosemary and rice water spray - thought id try the cheap stuff as the expensive stuff not worked!
